Arizona State University SPE 526: Concepts and Principles of Applied Behavior Analysis

During this week's module we discussed Antecedent conditions and covered BACB task lists B-10 and B-12. I found this week's module very dense and a little bit confusing. In turn, this
made me sit down and really have to hone in on definitions and how I can apply them to my work. Task list B-10 states “Define and provide examples of stimulus control” and to follow this B-12 states “Define and provide examples of motivating operations” (BACB, task list 5th ed. 2017). In regards to B-10 and the topic of stimulus control, it is to be noted that both the frequency and the duration of the targeted behavior is altered by either the presence or absence of
an antecedent stimulus (Cooper et al., 2020). One example would be if a child is on a working schedule 1 minute of work and 3 minutes of play. After the child earns their break they will play for 3 minutes, once the sound of the timer goes off they come back to the table for work. To be able to maintain or create stimulus control, one must have two stimuli and differential consequences. MO’s or motivating operations, are an environmental variable that can either increase or decrease the effectiveness of the reinforcement or punishment (Cooper et al., 2020). Motivating operations can have a value-altering effect that occurs with the consequence, when this happens it either will get rid of or determine how effective the punishment or reinforcement is. The next effect that could take place would be behavior altering. What will happen is the effect will happen to the current behavior that either abates or evokes what was reinforced or punished earlier on. We also learned about two types of motivating operations, which were unconditioned
“UMO” and conditioned “CMO”. Both of these can be used to determine motivating operations with a client.

Like every module, Ethic code 2.01 “providing effective treatment” for clients can be applied– we must make sure what we are doing is working and can be applied continuously. The next code is 2.13 “selecting, Designing, and Implementing Assessments” could be applied to this
module. We must make sure our assessments are in tune with the programs and interventions we are implementing.

A local CHP office postulates that, over a specific road with posted speed limit of 40 mph, people travel at higher
rates of speeds at night than during the day. The Research Office collected all speeding tickets given on the

Imagine you are an educational researcher who wants to learn about the type of psychological atmosphere in which middle school students feel most comfortable and best able to concentrate on their studies. You plan to look at a wide variety of factors that might contribute to such an atmosphere—both physical factors (e.g., cleanliness and colorfulness of the school building) and social factors—(e.g., teacher-student relationships, general tolerance for diverse behaviors and beliefs). You realize that students might identify important factors that you yourself haven't even thought of. In this situation, your best choice would probably be:
Question options:
A)
an experimental study with at least three treatment groups.
B)
an experimental study with one treatment group and one control group.
C)
a descriptive, quantitative study.
D)
a qualitative

Assume you are an executive of a large transportation company, and your firm's profit is highly sensitive to fuel cost. The price of gasoline and diesel changes daily, however, your customers expect to be quoted a price for delivery services days, weeks, and sometimes, MONTHS in advance. Therefore, your firm relies heavily on forecasting the price of fuel. Which method of forecasting might you use, qualitative or quantitative? And finally, what are the limitations to business forecasting.

Appalachian Bear Rescue (ABR) is a not-for-profit organization located near the Great Smoky Mountains
National Park. ABR's programs include the rehabilitation of orphaned and injured black bears, as well as
research and education about Appalachian black bears. ABR provides the most natural environment possible
for rehabilitating black bears before their release back into the wild.
Recently, Katie Settlage performed a study to learn more about the Appalachian black bear population
in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. She and a team of researchers found 68 black bears in the park
and took measurements such as paw size, weight, and shoulder height. The stem-and-leaf plots below show
the shoulder heights (in centimeters) of the 40 male and 28 female bears from the study.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), as part of its internal security mission,
serves as a database for all the reported crimes committed in the United States. One question
that might be of interest is does having more police officers reduce the number of homicides? To
investigate this claim, the 2013 data from the twenty largest municipal cities was supplied by the
FBI's Uniform Crime Report. Below are two observations from the dataset:

Population of city in 1,000s of people
Number of homicides in the year 2013
Number of police officers per 1,000 people
Number of people per square mile
Median home price in $100,000
