Harm Reduction What is it? - Harm reduction is an umbrella term for interventions aiming to reduce the problematic effects of behaviors (Marlatt, 1998). Most frequently associated with substance use, harm reduction also applies to any decisions that have negative consequences associated with them.
How does it work? Harm reduction is an approach that emphasizes engaging directly with people who use drugs to prevent overdose and infectious disease transmission, improve the physical, mental, and social wellbeing of those served, and offer low- threshold options for accessing substance use disorder treatment and other health care services Harm reduction services save lives by being available and accessible in a matter that emphasizes the need for humility and compassion toward people who use drugs. Harm reduction plays a significant role in preventing drug-related deaths and offering access to healthcare, social services, and treatment. These services decrease overdose fatalities, acute life- threatening infections related to unsterile drug injection, and chronic diseases such as HIV/HCV

What is the role of human service workers? They evaluate a client's needs, create a treatment plan, and put the plan into action. Throughout the process, they provide clients with emotional support. Working closely with the client, human service workers identify problems and create a plan for services to help the client solve these problems. Human services workers play an integral role in preventing crime, supporting victims, and guiding offenders in a different direction. In this career, you'll work with a very specific demographic: Prisoners, juvenile detainees, and victims of abuse and other crimes.
What are some risks? Some risks of harm reduction is that providing people with Narcan, clean needles, and suboxone isn’t going to prevent them from continuing to harm themselves. This just aids them in continuing their habits rather than helping them quit them all together.
What are the benefits of this technique vs. another? Harm reduction approaches include elements of safer use, managed use, and medication-supported treatment plans. Harm reduction is designed to address the circumstances of the addiction in addition to the addiction itself, striving to minimize the harmful effects of addiction rather than condemning them altogether. VS Substance Counseling: Counseling can identify situations contributing to substance use. Counseling can provide direct support for addiction. Counseling can provide peer support for addiction. Counseling can offer new behavior strategies for recovery. Counseling can reduce the risk of relapse.

What rehabilitation methods does your technique utilize? Harm reduction is grounded in justice and human rights. It focuses on positive change and on working with people without judgement, coercion, discrimination, or requiring that people stop using drugs as a precondition of support. INFORMATION ON SAFER DRUG USE DRUG CONSUMPTION ROOMS (also called overdose prevention center's or supervised consumption sites) NEEDLE & SYRINGE PROGRAMMES OVERDOSE PREVENTION & REVERSAL OPIOID AGONIST THERAPY such as methadone and buprenorphine HOUSING DRUG CHECKING LEGAL/PARALEGAL SERVICES
How do those methods reduce the effects of prejudice, discrimination, and/ or aggression? These methods reduce the effects of prejudice, discrimination, and aggression by providing services to the individuals needing it and seeing that there are others like them that are getting the help they need and reducing the risk of harm by choosing a healthier option. These individuals are all there for something similar and they can relate to each other in some for or another which makes it less discriminating. Harm reduction is there for anyone and there is so much stigma around substance use and addiction that people who need the help, don’t seek it because of the judgement behind getting help. Harm reduction programs never judge, we are here to provide individuals with the service needed to help them in anyway, shape or form.
Identify a local program which exemplifies your technique and describe it. New Hope Community Services in Maysville, Ky which is local exemplifies harm reduction techniques by providing services to anyone without the judgement, prejudice, and discrimination. New Hope focuses on addiction services, needle exchanges, housing, trauma, anxiety, depression, and food insecurity. If you need the help, they are open 24 hours a day, just walk in and someone will be waiting to help you, no questions asked!
