Andrea Rodriguez 8056323 Rural vs City Social Work Services City and rural social work are the same when it comes to the goal that they work for but it is completely different when it comes to the process of how they do things. City social work agencies have more resources than the rural agencies leaving them with major disparities. Rural locations typically have more intimate communities where everyone knows each another due to the significantly lower population density distributed over a larger area. This not only implies that misfortunes might negatively affect a community's mental health as a whole, but it also raises the possibility of confidentiality issues given the likelihood that many individuals know one another outside of work. Noted that despite difficulties, the social work profession has generally placed a greater emphasis on urban settings, even though a major part of Americans live in rural areas. Although social workers must apply the same fundamental skills in all populations, it is crucial for practitioners to improve their specialized skill sets in order to handle the issues that are particular to urban and rural populations. They must have a thorough awareness of the distinctions between urban and rural social work in order to successfully provide good mental health services and to be able to advocate for these various vulnerable groups in the rural locations where there is less advocation due to the disparities in resources. These disparities can be from Increased drug usage and overdoses, lack of support for women, LGBTQA+, and even support for individuals who have been previously incarcerated,
This is noticeable when comparing the two social work agencies I decided to visit for this assignment. The agency I visited here in our city of El Paso was Pride Center which stands for “The Preparation and Resources for Independence through Determination with Excellence.” This agency has different resources compared to other city agencies here. The ultimate objective of this agency is to provide these young adults and youths with the tools they need to succeed as they enter adulthood. The services they offer include case management, employment assistance, resources to obtain affordable housing, LGBTQA+ resources, mental health, and substance abuse resources, food pantry, and access to limited financial assistance for things like bus passes, rent, or assistance with food stamps. Comparing that to the social service location I went to in Chaparral New Mexico. Chaparral is an unincorporated community, and from what I saw it seemed very underfunded when it came to commercial locations and roads. When I arrived at Help New Mexico which is a service location for family development. Their main focus is helping infants build a foundation for their education. When I asked about other resources they offered they only mentioned their center focused on that but when it came to helping the youth ( since that was the type of service I wanted to compare between rural and city social work agencies.) There were also Amanecer psychological services and other child centers. I think in my opinion the major difference between rural and city social and community services is the lack of resources they have. Cleary PRIDE center here in El Paso has plenty more resources to help the youth than the different centers combined here in chaparral. As well as funding not only for outreach resources but for infrastructure and transportation.
