Natalie Hamilton WGU ELL AJN1 Task 1: Contextual Factors November 17, 2023
General Information 1. I am a general education teacher for a Kindergarten class this school year. I teach all subjects: Literacy (phonics, reading, and writing), math, science, Social Studies, and SEL. There are 19 students in my class with ages ranging from 5 (now) to 6 years old. I teach them from 9:00am to 3:45pm, five days a week (with the exception of holidays or breaks). 2. 2. Discuss how one contextual factor impacted teaching and learning for each of the following areas: community, district, and school 3. This is my first-year teaching in an affluent neighborhood. All my previous schools have been title 1 or schools with many kids on free and reduced options. I feel as though I have a lot more parent involvement this year than in past years. Anything from volunteers, parent communication, parent support at home, etc—It has made such a difference this year. a. Parker Colorado is home to a population of 57.3k people, from which 95.6% are citizens. As of 2021, 7.55% of Parker, CO residents were born outside of the country (4.33k people). In 2021, there were 11 times more white (non-hispanic) residents (44.3k people) in Parker, CO than any other race or ethnicity. There were 4.05k White (Hispanic) and 2.74 Asian (Non-Hispanic) residents, the second and third most common ethnic groups (Data USA, 2021). I think our community is heavily focused on
education and puts a lot of value in it. You can see the kids all want to try and learn new things. b. Our school is a part of DCSD (Douglas County School District) in Parker, CO. Douglas County School District No. RE-1 is a highly rated, public school district located in CASTLE ROCK, CO. It has 63,596 students in grades PK, K-12 with a student-teacher ratio of 18 to 1. According to state test scores, 45% of students are at least proficient in math and 62% in reading (Niche, 2023). Our district holds our students to high standards. We are building for the future, not only future learners, but a strong foundation for being good humans. c. According to US News & World Report, Mountain View Elementary School is a public school located in Parker, CO, which is in a large suburb setting. The student population of Mountain View Elementary School is 330 and the school serves PK-2.The school’s minority student enrollment is 22%. The student-teacher ratio is 18:1, which is the same as that of the district. The student population is made up of 46% female students and 54% male students. The school enrolls 7% economically disadvantaged students. There are 19 equivalent full-time teachers (US News & World Report, 2023). Our school hold our students to the highest standards of achievement. We also strive to be Responsible, Respectful, and Safe in all things we do.

4. Our school boasts the advantage of being a 1 to 1 school—meaning each child has access to their own ipad or chrome book to use while at school. This is very beneficial during class on a daily basis as well as when we need to test for our standardized testing three times a year. I am able to assign leveled curriculum to students based on their need/ ability. It has greatly affected my low kiddos and my students that need enrichment. As I stated earlier, I have a wealth of parent involvement this year! Having volunteers in my class enables me to do more hands-on learning because I have help in centers and small groups. I’ve also noticed if I send resources home, paretns and students will utilize them and it has been really great for my low bunnies to be able to catch up and shrink the gap between them and their on grade level peers. 5. Two learning needs that I face this year specifically for my classroom are with a student with a behavior need and another who is an English Learner. I have a behavior plan in place for one of my students. She needs a ton of redirection, special instruction, positive rewards, and instructional chunking for us to get through our day. She takes some time and energy from other students in class, but the rest of my class has grown in patience and resilience in moving forward even when I need to slow down and help her. My English Learner is phenomenal: She is sweet, very eager to learn, and willing to help however she can. I have adapted many of our small groups to go over vocabulary she will
need in upcoming lessons as well as learning basic skill prerequisites she will need. I’ve worked closely with our ELD educator in our school to ensure we are on the same page and supporting her the best we can in class and small group!
