Describe your population of interest. My population of interest as a social worker will be elderly veterans. Working as a Medical Support Assistant at the Department of Veteran Affairs really inspired me to further my career working with veterans. They are kind, and risked their lives fighting for our Country, and for that I’m honored and wanted to give back to help our veterans. Identify one professional role that a social worker may assume when working with this population. One professional role that a social worker may assume when working with veterans are to focus on the veterans needs and living environments. Social workers are there to assist veterans and help them apply for different programs if they are homeless. Social workers also help with discharges and making sure they have the proper education and knowledge when being discharge so they can continue to stay healthy. Explain how you might apply ecological or systems theory when working with the population. When a veteran comes into a social worker office, you must learn about their culture, their family, and their environment. If a veteran is admitted for mental health, the social worker will use the systems theory to understand what the veteran is going through, for example if there was abuse from the family or has anybody in the family suffered from mental health. System Theory provides social workers with a conceptual framework that can guide how they view the world. (Kirst-Ashman, 2018). Describe specific steps you will take to develop your knowledge of this population through critical thought and research. Different steps I will take to develop my knowledge of working with veterans, is to understand their culture and get to know them a little better than what’s provided on their geographic profile. A social worker must be able to know the patient’s culture and family history because you don’t want to say anything to hurt the patient feelings. I will also use different resources to help veterans who are homeless and in need. References
