1-3 Topic Exploration 2 Introduction The familial trend that I will be using for my final project is technology, social media’s influence on parenting. I chose this topic because for one I am a mother and for the other I sometimes pay attention to my phone too much. I have realized the effects it was having on my boys. Technology and social media can have a positive and a negative influence on parenting. For instance, a positive is social media can strengthen family bonds if they live far away from each other, a negative is the increased use of the devices can lead to reduced quality time with parents and children (Coyne, et al., 2017). This generation it seems like the parents are glued to their phones and tablets to check their social media. I feel that technology and social media are causing a huge negative effect on the connection between the parents and the child(ren). Familial Trend Technology and social media have specific influences on family dynamics. Some of these specifics are checking our emails for work, scrolling through social media, implications for mental health, lack of communication, less bonding time, social development, and entertaining themselves. These devices are taking away family time/bonding and can cause strain on family dynamics. For instance, “excessive social media use can have implications for mental health by having feelings of isolation, anxiety, and depression. It also hinders parent-child bonding and limits quality time spent together” (CareClinic, 2024). Whereas “some research suggests that parents who are on social media have access to greater social support and health information. However, there is evidence that connects parental social media use to negative outcomes such as increased parental stress, depression, and distraction” (Olpin, Hanson, & Crandall, 2023). According to Gordon, many parents have reported using technology to alleviate the boredom and

Historical Context Technology has become an integral part of our daily lives by transforming the way we communicate, work, and entertain ourselves. Technology and social media have evolved over the years. The norm used to be telegrams or cave drawings. Social media back in the 1800s was telegrams where they would send an individual to relay the message to the person, and then in the 1960s-70s is when the internet came (Jones, 2024). Technology has even become available for children as young as 2 years old. There are apps for 2-year-olds to learn their numbers, letters, shapes, and colors. Just like anything else there are always positive and negative effects. A positive effect is it can help families that live apart keep in touch, and a negative effect is bullying. I have seen in mother groups that I am in where a mother is asking for advice and others are downgrading her and making her think she is this horrible mother. In this generation I think social media has more negative effects now then positives due to the bullying.
