1 What’s Going On? Carmela S.D. Stanton Troy University SWK6601: Introduction to Social Policy
2 What’s Going On? What's going on in the world today? “Will Ukraine's Zelenskyy leave Congress empty-handed? That depends on Republicans” by Francesca Chambers and Tom Vanden Brook. In Washington, the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was on Capital Hill needing the United States to get congress to continue supporting the fighting of the war in Ukraine. However, he left Capital Hill empty handed because the Republican party looking to leave them out of the bill that would allow our government to continue spending money, which resulted can result in there being no aid provided for the War in Ukrainian. With a governmental shut down looming in the United States, this would result in Ukraine not getting the aid they need to continue the war. However, last year the lawmakers were able to rally to pass the $45 billion in aid in Ukraine, which was controlled by the Democrats and the GOP-run Congress. With the government shut down looming, this could mean furloughs for federal employees and preventing the Pentagon from providing weapons and ammunition, education, and training for the Ukrainian forces according to Chrsitopher Sherwood, Pentagon spokesperson. What social policies are relevant to today's world? The war in Ukrainian play an important role in the economic and social policies for the United States. The loss of lives results in humanitarian crisis that affects millions of people because of the economic impact that includes the commodity market like oil, gas, and wheat prices will continue to increase (Caldara et al., 2022). With the war, there can be a reduction in the global GDP growth to increase by 2.5 percent with global consumer price inflation. Policymakers are looking for social policies that will allow them to address individuals who are
3 vulnerable and affected by the war. The policies that are affected by the war is housing assistance, food provision, medical assistance, childcare and schooling for those who are leaving Ukraine to relocate in the United States (Caldara et al., 2022). Policymakers should also consider the impact of the war on developing and emerging market economies, particularly in terms of higher food prices and potential negative humanitarian impacts. What's going on in the news? In the news in Alabama, two brothers are convicted in murder for hire plot killing of elementary school teacher over child support and alimony. Jason and Darin plotted to kill Jason ´s ex-wife, Sara Starr, after a judge ordered Jason to pay her a “significant portion” of his income after their divorce, according to prosecutors. Sara Starr was shot to death outside her home in 2017. Jason paid Darin $2600 to kill his ex-wife, who was a schoolteacher and mother of two sets of twins.
