1 Connecting Passion with Goals Breana Graham Master of Social Work, Walden University SOCW 6351: Social Policy, Welfare, and Change Avril Williams Knox March 17, 2024
2 Connecting Passion with Goals A social issue/problem that I am most passionate about is the Geriatric population and the lack of resources and healthcare they are provided. In my line of work as a Community Health Worker; I notice so many seniors struggling with unmet healthcare needs and even some experiencing homelessness. These seniors tend to find themselves in these predicaments due to many reasons but one that sticks out is not having support and knowledge from their healthcare providers and family to help them access the needed resources. Two goals for addressing this goal are to bring more awareness to the senior population as they are the most overlooked population; seniors tend to get what is leftover when it comes to government assistance because most officials and policy makers believe that seniors should have retirement or magical funds to live in today’s society. 10 years ago, retirement looked different for those approaching that lifestyle but with the high rise in cost of groceries, medications, insurance policies, and copays for doctors and specialist visits. Honestly there aren’t many policies that exist to address the social issue because there is Medicare; but as someone who deals with these benefits there is not much that these seniors can benefit from. 9 times out of 10 seniors have more than one health concern and at least one of those tend to need follow up care with a specialist; with these conditions
3 there is a need for specialty drugs and most manufacturers offer programs for assistance with copay though if patients are with government insurance, they tend to be ineligible for these program that could assist with finances to cover this drug. So, if patients are unable to pay for their drugs, they either find themselves borrowing, getting in debt, or suffering and not having the drug at all. So, in my professional opinion working with this population everyday there isn’t much available to these seniors and if you think medical is the only concern, we can navigate to the food needs. Most seniors after reaching a certain age should be on a balanced diet or regime that focuses on their health needs and concerns. With SNAP benefits these patients re qualifying for $25-$50. It is very irrational to believe that one with special diet needs can successfully obtain all the necessary food to manage their healthy diets. Even though I am one individual I can spread awareness about the needs of the geriatric population to important officials and representatives that could potentially share the disparities and barriers that I am experiencing with clients and bring awareness to their colleagues. With us creating a stir in our organization we could potentially build the foundation for those who are in policy making positions and higher to help bring more resources and necessary laws to offer our seniors the needed support.
