Running head: Wilczynski’s Text Learning Assignment #1: Chapter 1 & 2 1 Wilczynski’s Text Learning Assignment #2: Chapters 3 & 4 Jazmine Scott SPCE 680: 819- Introduction to Persons with Autism Ball State University
Wilczynski’s Text Learning Assignment #1: Chapters 3 & 4 The third chapter I found the most interesting within Systematic Review from the text A Practical Guide to Finding Treatments That Work for People with Autism . The purpose of this chapter was to describe the important practices that are centered around client health. From those, I concluded that medication, various health conditions, and mental health are contributing factors to a client’s overall state. This chapter was extremely relatable to my career goal of becoming a board-certified behavioral analyst operating in the field of applied behavioral analysis with a concentration in autism. Towards the end of the chapter, Wilczynski (2017) mentioned that medical professionals can often work together to offer the best treatment possible. I am now able to understand my past experience as a registered behavioral technician, where I witnessed my supervisors meet with speech therapist, psychologist, and occupational therapists often. The author did an amazing job of describing each contributing factor to a client’s health while providing excellent examples. For instance, I learned about 15-30% of individuals with ASD suffer from epilepsy which often triggers aggression. I particularly appreciated this chapter because it broadened my outlook on patient treatment and allowed me to notice parallelism in my current occupation. From this chapter, I took note that although some kiddos may not be diagnosed with comorbid conditions, one should always assume as such (Wilczynski, 2017). This is extremely helpful for practitioners to understand that these conditions will impact treatment decisions, such as whether or not a child should or can be restrained. Within this chapter, I learned the importance of paying attention to the science available to obtain the most accurate date for each client. As a medical professional, I must weigh all treatment options and seek outside assistance from other medical professionals 2
Wilczynski’s Text Learning Assignment #1: Chapters 3 & 4 for a total effort. I also must be aware of the current statistics of individuals with ASD and comorbid conditions. Within the book, I found the fourth chapter to be the next most interesting topic. The fourth chapter discussed the importance of skill mastery for client’s and the idea that some behavioral changes have effects on the client’s ability to master skills. A client’s repertoire and behavioral cusps are necessary for a BCBA to be mindful of as they work simultaneously. By identifying behavioral cusps, practitioners can identify which behaviors to target and allows them create the most appropriate behavioral intervention plan (Wilczynksi, 2017). I am aware that certain assessments are given to clients by BCBAs as the first step to determining how to treat them. This chapter provided a proceeding perspective that assessments should be done concurrently with client treatment to avoid the speculation of skills. When deciding treatment for a client, it is essential that the BCBA is aware that the client possess the skills or not to achieve the desired targets. I learned that past treatments can be revisited once a client’s develops new skills and a client's repertoire should be analyzed prior to treatment decisions (Wilczynski, 2017). As a medical professional, I have an obligation to ensure I am not subconsciously hindering my client’s success. This can unintentionally be done by misevaluating skills and ignoring behavioral cusps. These cusps are actions that greatly increase a client's repertoire's ability to adapt to new situations, contexts, and stimulus controls (ABA Connect, 2017). Within my experience, I have been taught the importance of mand repertoire as a vital component to verbal behavior within early school age children. This is chapter offered practitioners steps to take for selecting treatment plans and the many factors that are associated with choosing the most effective ones. For BCBAs, it is crucial to pay attention to science given 3
