PCN-100: Topic 1 Short Answer Questions Directions: Provide short answers of 100-150 words each for the following questions/statements. Do not exceed 200 words for your response. Include at least two scholarly resources in addition to the course textbook to support your discussion for each response. 1. Explain the difference between psychological dependence and physical dependence related to substance use, misuse, and dependence. Psychological dependence, according to American Addiction Center (2024), refers to a condition in which an individual becomes emotionally and mentally reliant on recovering from or processing addiction related to substance use. Upon ceasing the use of these substances or behaviors, withdrawal symptoms may occur, such as anxiety, depression, and cognitive issues (Capuzzi and Stauffer, 2020, p.10). Physical dependence, on the other hand, is a state where the body has adjusted to the drug's presence, leading to a range of physical symptoms like tremors, sweating, nausea, vomiting, and muscle pain upon sudden or gradual withdrawal (SAMHSA, 2012). Long-term use of a tolerance- forming drug often results in physical dependence, making it challenging for individuals to quit without professional help (SAMHSA, 2023). 2. Examine the consequences of drug use and the related stigmas and stereotypes. Discuss your viewpoint about this issue and identify one theoretical model of addiction supporting your viewpoint. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration, the consequences of drug use can lead to dependency and addiction, injury, accidents, health problems, sleep issues, affects you and those close to you, personal and social life (SAMHSA). This model suggests that certain individuals are unable to control their addiction, are not accountable for their actions, and may engage in criminal behavior or experience relapse even after receiving treatment (Capuzzi et al., 2020). Because there is a stigma about people who have substance use disorder or have developed addiction to alcohol and drugs, we can’t acknowledge they have a disease. They deserve to be treated with compassion and care, especially when it comes to seeking medical help. It's important to recognize that those who seek medical attention for any reason are not just "junkies", but regular patients who require support and understanding.
