Tishanna Davis CHD216: Written Assignment #4 After reading the article “Problem Solving with Parents” it gave great tips on how teachers and parents should work together to problem solve and made me think as an educator what I could share with my staff on how we could implement them in the classrooms. It’s many ways teachers and parents should work together to problem solve. But effective problem solving requires brainstorming, give-take and open-minded solution seeking. Collaboration between parents and teachers is crucial for a child’s academic and social development. When parents and teachers work together, children are more likely to succeed in school and at home. When teachers and parents work together to problem solve, it is important that the teachers should be on the same side as the parents. Important things to remember when working with parents to problem solve are communicating regularly whether it’s a phone call or written communication. Parent-teacher meetings to talk to about the problems and offer outside resources if necessary. Collaborating with the parents, asking them questions to get their point of view. Having feedback from both sides to better understand the child in both environments. Also showing the parents support, understanding their concerns, and offering professional resources. I recently had to have a problem-solving meeting with a child’s parent. The child’s behavior started to become an issue in the classroom and had to call a meeting to discuss it with his parents. It required brainstorming to figure out the underlying issue, when it started, if it was a significant event that occurred when we first noticed the change in behavior, etc. Questions were asked by both parties, parents, and his teacher. Questions that were asked were about how it was handled at home as well as in school and solutions that worked and may not work. But everyone kept an open mind to help the child. We collaborated and came up with alternative ideas and solutions to try and offered outside resource which the parents utilized. In the end the child has better behavior, the parents took him to an outside resource we were able to offer and continue to support the family. When working with a parent when trying to solve a problem, I try to put myself in their shoes. How would I want to be treated if I caused an issue and how would I want someone to approach me about it.
