Case Study Analysis: Case Study 1 - Julio Marissa Shumate 202320 HUS440 – O Family Dynamics 02/03/2024 I. Case Study Key Players [Instructions: indicate all players involved in the case, including primary and secondary players, including the following: Provide names, demographic information, relationships to one another, what is the educational/vocational history of these individuals? What is the medical and psychological history of these individuals?] Key Player 1: Julio – Son of Juan and Jade, did not get to see his father Juan often Key Player 2: Juan – Jades husband and Julios father’s, traveled a lot for work, not home often, main one in the home to discipline the children Key Player 3: Jade – Juan’s wife and Julio’s mother Key Player 4: Julie – Julios wife Key Player 5: Alex- Julie and Julies son Key Player example: Bernard: 53, father to son Anthony II. Case Background Circumstances Julio was raised by his mother primarily, however, was often harshly disciplined by his father. Julio’s father would spank Julio when he was young and call him names that were degrading to him. Julio’s mother, Jade, would enable her husband Juan by telling him things his children have done so that he can discipline them instead of her disciplining them. This could be part of her or their culture, as in many cultures the ‘man of the house’ is the one who should discipline the children. Julio is now married to Julie and has a son of his own, Alex. Julie was raised by gentle parents who never spanked their children or talked down to them. Julio began spanking Alex at a young age and started calling him degrading names, just as his father did to him. Julie is concerned about his parenting and discipline choices and states that it is starting to affect their family and marriage. The reason for professional involvement is the constant strain on their marriage and family due to belief differences when it comes to disciplining Alex. Both Jade and Julio want to discipline their child just as they were disciplined, and this is very different from each other. There are many possibilities in this case, Julio could seek therapy and counseling to overcome his childhood factors, including the discipline he received. Another possibility is that Julio and Jade aren’t able to work out their parenting differences and end up separating. Julio has begun to realize that he is turning into his father, disciplining his child with anger just as he was disciplined. There are several things impacting this case. Julio and Julie share parental custody of Alex, so if they were not able to work out their marriage, custody of Alex would be in the middle. Another factor is the Department of Social Services could be contacted regarding Julio’s questionable parenting choices. Another factor could be Julio’s family culture, many cultures believe that the man should be the one to discipline the children in the home. III. Environmental, Familial, Social Case Circumstances Environmental Circumstances (positive and negative) One positive environmental circumstance is that Jade and Julio are still together and seem to be motivated to reach out for help. This is positive for Alex as he sees his parent’s trying to overcome their differences. A negative environmental circumstance is that the home environment could be negatively
impacting Alex. If his parents are fighting and arguing this could cause stress on Alex and he may even feel responsible for their issues. Familial Circumstances (positive and negative) Positive familial circumstances is that Julio is able to recognize the dysfunctional environment that was involved in his childhood and family. Also, Jade is able to recognize that their family is under stress and the reason behind the stress. Another positive is that Jade seems to have a positive outlook on disciplining Alex and had a overall positive childhood and family. Negative familial circumstances are that Julios’ family is under stress due to him becoming his father. Also, that Julio’s family seemed to have a negative effect on him and is now affecting his family. Social Circumstances (positive and negative) There is little known about the social environment surrounding this case. A positive social environment would be that the family had positive relationships with family friends. Another positive would be that Alex has a lot of support from friends and peers. A negative would be if Alex has trouble making friends and lacks social support at school or home. IV. Legal Implications Some legal implications surrounding this case are if Julio and Jade were to separate, they both share legal parental custody of Alex. This would put Alex in the middle of a legal custody battle between both parents. Another legal implication to consider is that the Department of Social Services could become involved due to questionable disciplining choices made by Julio. A case could be opened due to speculation of verbal and physical abuse of Alex. V. Community-Based Resources Community Based Resource 1: Website of Resource: https://www.jodiprovincecs.com/ Connection to Case: Jodi Province counseling services provides services in Wilkes County, NC to many different individuals. I would recommend that Julio attend counseling services to try to overcome his childhood experiences and be a better father. Julio would be able to receive CBT therapy or Person-Centered Approach therapy that could help him better understand his childhood problems and how to take a different approach when parenting. Community Based Resource 2: Website of Resource: https://www.triplep-parenting.com/nc-en/triple-p/ Connection to Case: Triple P Positive Parenting Program offers free parenting classes that are both offered in person and virtual. I would recommend that Julio attend these free parenting classes to gain a better idea of how-to parent Alex and how to deal with his attitude and/or behaviors. Jade could also attend these classes with Julio so that they can work together and find a better way to discipline Alex together. VI. Case Plan and Recommendations [Instructions: In a paragraph each, provide a detailed recommendation of what you would do in this case to aid the client (you may include how your community resources will be involved). Indicate the following in your recommendations: What are the pros and cons of your plan? Consider potential consequences of all options when determining the best course of action. Are the implications to your decision?]
Case Plan: I suggest that Julio attend counseling at Jodi Province Counseling as soon as possible. This could help Julio overcome a lot of negative events that occurred from his childhood. I would also suggest that Julio and Jade attend Triple P Parenting classes together. This could help them learn more about better ways to discipline Alex and work together as parents. Alex may also need counseling in the future due to Julio degrading him or mentally and physically abusing him. This would be a good idea after Julio and Jade have overcome their issues in their marriage and parenting. It’s important not to overwhelm Alex any more or add anymore stress to him currently. Benefits of Proposed Plan: Benefits is that Julio is able to receive counseling to help overcome his relationship with his father. Another benefit is for Jade and Julio to work together to both become better parents and give Alex the best life possible. With this plan, Jade and Julio would attend parenting classes together so that they can learn how to work together. Potential Downfalls of Proposed Plan: One downfall to this plan is if Julio’s culture or beliefs is that as the ‘man of the house’ he is the only one that should discipline Alex. If this is the case, then it will be hard for him and Jade to work together to overcome their issues with discipling until Julio is able to overcome his childhood trauma. Another downfall is if Jade and Julio are not able to work out their marital problems and end up separating, then this will create new problems with custody and discipling concerns with Julio. VII. Professional Skills Instructions: In a paragraph each, indicate 3 professional skills you would use in this case and how it connects/relates to this specific case. Consider what skills on your resume can be highlighted. Examples: Active listening, working collaboratively with other agencies, teamwork with a colleague, Goal setting, providing accountability.] Professional Skill 1: Ability to Adapt/Flexiblity Connection to Case: This case has many variables and could change directions at any time. This means the professional will need to be flexible and able to adapt to any changes in the case. Changes that could occur are Julio and Jade separating, the Department of Social Services becoming involved, or Julio’s cultures and beliefs interfering with his ability to seek help through counseling. Professional Skill 2: Multicultural understanding Connection to Case: Julio and Jade could come from very different cultures and beliefs, so it’s important to be able to understand their culture with respect. The professional must also be able to work with these different cultures and keep them in mind when providing referrals and suggestions. Professional Skill 3: Ability to remain neutral/non bias Connection to Case: When working on this case, it’s important not to take sides between Jade or Julio and remain non bias throughout. Even though Julio seems to be taking a more aggressive approach to parenting, it’s important to understand his underlying issues that results from his

childhood. By remaining non bias, you are able to see issues from both sides of the relationship and be more helpful to their relationship altogether. The theory that I would focus on with this case is the Relational Dialectics Theory. The reason I chose this theory is because Julio is stuck between his childhood experiences and how he was disciplined, and not wanting to be like his father and pleasing his wife and marriage. This is a result of struggles between two different discourses (Galven, K.M. et. al. 2019). Neither of these discourses show more significant than the other, however, they cause contradicting conflict in Julio’s life. Each of these discourses appear at different times, depending on the situation and scenario. Julio wants to be a better father than his father was, however, his childhood experiences and how he was treated sometimes seem to overcome him and his ability to see things clearly. Julio needs to overcome his childhood in order to progress towards becoming a better father.
