What is the special education teachers’ role in supporting learning, improving, planning, and practice, upholding professional expectations and ethics, and collaboratively advancing the profession? The special educator’s role ultimately is to provide instruction and support which facilitates learning and participation for students with disabilities. To do this the teacher must first actively build relationships and trust with the students. It is the teacher’s responsibility to then use what they know about the student to implement individualized instruction that meets the needs of the student. While planning for future instruction or changes in the student’s goals, special education teachers should use multiple forms of assessment. This includes both formal and informal assessments. It is the educator’s role to conduct assessments for students to be successful. While collaborating with teachers, families, or other professionals, it is the special educator’s responsibility to make sure all decision-making is data-informed and student-driven. What dispositions, that you currently possess, will help you become a successful teacher? What dispositions do you need to work on before you enter the classroom as a first-year teacher? I believe, after my first year of teaching, I possess multiple dispositions of a successful teacher. The disposition I feel strongest about is being sensitive to the individual learning and social needs of students. I had dyslexia, ADHD, and a reading comprehension disability. I did not get a diagnosis until 5th grade, so my elementary years were tough. I am confident in my ability to be sensitive to learning and social needs because I have first-hand experience. This will help me become a successful teacher by allowing me to be empathetic towards my students and understand that every student learns differently at their own pace. A disposition I believe I need to improve on before my first year in a Special Education classroom is understanding that reflection combined with experience leads to growth as a professional. When I finish graduate school, I will only be ending my 3rd year of teaching. Although I know I do everything I can to be the best teacher I can be, I must remember the educators I look up to have 10 or more years of experience to get them to where they are. I have to improve on not getting discouraged and actively reflecting on both my good days and my bad days. What effect could personal biases have on the expectations that teachers have for their students? How could these biases affect their relationships with students and their families? Whether we like to admit it or not everybody has biases, it is how you handle those biases that reflect on your teaching. Personal biases can be anything from gender, race, socioeconomic status or having certain identifiers to a particular student based on your perception of the “perfect” student. These personal biases can affect expectations of a student in multiple different ways. For example, if a teacher holds a bias against students who come from low income, they may believe that those students will not be able to get their homework done. This bias could lead to the teacher no longer giving those students homework. If the teacher did this, she is not holding those students to the same expectations and the rest of the class and they are missing out on instruction and practice. These biases not only effect the relationship with the student but also with the student’s family. From my experience working in a title 1 school, I have seen how biases can affect how teachers communicate with families. Many of our students come from low-income households where the parents work a lot of hours in order to provide. Some teachers believe that because the parents are always working and may sometimes be hard to reach, they do not care about their child’s learning. If teachers believe this, they may not communicate as much with parents which would ultimately hinder that relationship.
Education I believe that the developing relationships with families based on mutual respect and actively involving families and individuals with exceptionalities and educational decision making is very important for special education teachers practicing college league with others who are providing services to individuals with exceptionalities using evidence instructional data research and professional knowledge to inform practice is also very important part of the job teachers should also pay play their part in advocating for professional conditions and resources that will improve learning outcomes for children with disabilities when considering my own dispositions I strongly believe that great teachers have a passion for what they're teaching and what they're teaching it is unlikely that a student will get excited have subject every teacher fails to convey enthusiasm for the subject this means that no matter how many times teachers cover the same lesson plans they must present them in a way that is fresh meaningful and compelling teachers must devise interesting lesson plans assignments tests field trips and incentives for learning variety is important to keep students from getting bored even teacher of a subject that isn't technically considered creative algebra for example so it's gonna come up with interesting ways to present the subject matter teachers should also be creative enough to come up with ways of adapting plants to the different learning styles other students working with students of irony of variety personalities and abilities can be a challenge to succeed the teacher should have a genuine compassion and concern for the students teachers can't leave with their egos they must remember that the students come first as teachers we often believe that we compete with the sector with our students in fact many of our teacher education programs emphasize the importance of objectivity in assessment although we may try to be neutral we will have values beliefs and dispositions dispositions that impact how we relate to others these assumptions are not necessarily that thing since they often help us understand unknown situations we're trying to make sense of what is happening around us but when our assumptions are manifested as implicit biases that can lead to imposed identities we often reinforce negative stereotypes and negative school climates without even knowing it understanding hidden associations assumptions or voices allows us to better understand ourselves so we can work with others towards a mediated identity or a positive academic and social identities can be acquired and nurtured through an acid model for identity construction by critically analyzing each section teachers can become more aware of how their preconceived notions and implicit bias can interact with institutional structures that perpetuate bias and and inequity through self study teachers can reexamine practices programs and policies so as to embrace culturally responsive pedagogy and provide more equitably opportunities for their children to learn thank you for listening.
the role of special education teacher extends beyond providing services to students in the department special education teachers must be willing to serve as not only students or their caseloads but also students inside of the Co teaching setting who require help that is to say we must be willing to help not only special education students but must be willing to help students who are not labeled special education students special education teachers must be able to work alone and collaborate with other teachers inside and outside of Co teaching environment especially education teachers must be willing to develop plans to implement plans develop goals help students achieve those goals develop IP's and implement I bees another thing is that special education teachers must ethically address the needs of all students on and off of their caseloads no matter whether the students on your case though no matter if the students not in your case though it's a must that we are willing to help them address their needs and identify what services we can provide to help those students from under their tier one Tier 2 tier three are classified as special education student special education teacher must be willing to revise access to those students ethical manner right so when examining my disposition as a teacher I strongly believe that collaboration can lead to success I believe in working with others to achieve a common goal their common goal is to help our learners achieve academic success in my opinion first year teachers should be willing to work with others and be focused on the success of our learners one important factor that should be considered is that personal biases related to student expectations should not be brought inside of the classroom placing learner expectations on learners based on personal biases can negatively impact how teachers perform and how our students perform additionally placing learning expectations on students can hinder the development of the parent teacher and the teacher student relationship which is a must in the school system it is a must that the teacher and the student and the parent and the teacher build relationships to work together to address the needs of those students I'm advised teachers to not focus on what they want us to know but focus on what the student already knows and build from there it's been a pleasure speaking to you I enjoyed the presentation
