Report
The kindergarten teacher has observed Kathryn, and it appears she might be academically and behaviorally delayed. It has been discussed with the school’s Child Study Team that an evaluation of Kathryn’s behaviors and progress in school is needed. Kathryn’s parents have agreed to get the evaluation done. The results from the evaluation have determined that Kathryn is eligible for services for students with intellectual disabilities (Material from Lesson 3 Rio Salado). An intelligence assessment instrument is needed because Kathryn is delayed academically and behaviorally. The Stanford-Binet 5 th edition should be used for the intelligence assessment because it is used for people aged 2 and above. Kathryn is 5 years and 4 months old, and she is displaying the behaviors of a child who is 2-3 years old. Kathryn speaks using single words instead of complete sentences or phrases (Material from Lesson 3 Rio Salado). An adaptive functioning instrument is needed because Kathryn has poor social skills and difficulties playing and sharing with others. The Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales would be used for Kathryn since the age range for this assessment is from birth through adulthood. There are forms that parents, caregivers and teachers fill out about Kathryn in the areas of communication, daily living skills, socialization, social skills and maladaptive behavior index. The kindergarten teacher has observed that Kathryn is having difficulties with social skills and socialization with other children (Material from Lesson 3 Rio Salado). According to IDEA, Kathryn will be placed in the least restrictive environment and her placement will be evaluated annually based on her IEP. By law, special education must occur in the least restrictive environment that meets the student's individual needs. Students should be spending as much time as possible in general education classrooms. Students receive services by being pulled out of general education classes by a specialist who will work with the student on their IEP goals. ( www.exceptionallives.com ) The placement decision was made by the IEP team but could have been made by another group who know Kathryn and the meaning of her evaluation data. Kathryn’s evaluation determined that she has a mild intellectual disability and is not automatically placed in a classroom with students who have intellectual disabilities. Kathryn’s parents were part of the placement decision and will be provided with written notice of the placement decision before the implementation of the placement begins (Material from Lesson 3 Rio Salado).
