2 The familiar trend that I will be focusing on is technology, social media’s influence on parenting. Everywhere we look there is technology. Socia media is a big part of our lives. We use it to connect to family, find out information we do not know, and new trends. Parents often turn to social media for parenting tips, connect with other parents, and share experiences. However, the curated nature of posts may lead to unrealistic expectations. Although technology can be a great tool for parents, some parents use technology as a babysitting tool. “Giving young children smart screen devices, such as tablets or computers, has become a widespread practice, if not a fashion, in modern parenting. In the United States, as of the year 2015, three-fourths of 4-year-olds had their own mobile device, more than 90% used smart tablet devices prior to age 1, and 43.5% of < 1-year-olds used mobile devices on daily basis” (Chen, 2020, P.1.). Besides the technology that children are using, parents have become more engrossed with social media. This can cause a shift in family dynamics. “Excessive use of social media may affect a strong bond between a parent and a child. Parents are more distracted and less in tune with their children if they are constantly focusing attention on their devices. Parents who spend an excessive amount of time on sites such as Facebook, YouTube, and so on may be prone to neglecting their children or leaving them unsupervised for short period of time while they become immersed in the information shared through social media” (Inc.Outlook, 2019). The advent of technology and social media has significantly transformed parenting practices. In the past, parenting relied on traditional sources like family, community, and printed materials. The digital age has introduced instant access to information, online
3 parenting communities, and a constant flow of advice. Parents now navigate a landscape where social media platforms shape parenting norms, trends, and expectations. The rapid dissemination of information, along with the potential for comparison and judgment, has influenced parenting styles. Additionally, concerns about screen time, online safety, and the impact of digital devices on child development have become prominent issues in contemporary parenting discussions (Auxier, et.al., 2020).
