Discussion One Hello everyone, My name is Nikie, and I am pursuing a bachelor’s degree in human services. I'm from Chattanooga, TN, happily married, and I am a proud army mom to my only son. I am also raising my 14-year-old niece and 12-year-old nephew. During this week's reading I found that for me that functionalism is the most useful in making sense of my everyday life. I feel that my personal experience did shape this. I grew up in a household where everyone had their own roles. My dad worked, my mom stayed at home and did all the household duties, and us kids went to school and did our chores. In my household everyone has their own roles. My husband and I work and share the household duties while my niece and nephew go to school and do their chores, this is our norm. The theory that I feel is the most useful for making sense of how families interact would be the symbolic interactionism. In our textbook, Symbolic interactionism is defined as "A theory concerned with the ability of humans to see themselves through the eyes of others and to enact social roles based on others’ expectations"(Cohen, 2021). I feel that symbolic interactionism is particularly relevant for understanding family interactions because it focuses on the micro-level of social life, emphasizing the significance of symbols, language, and individual interactions. In the context of families, where daily communication and shared meanings are crucial, this perspective offers insights into how family members interpret and respond to each other's actions, gestures, and words. It helps capture the nuanced and subjective aspects of family dynamics, providing an understanding of the intricate patterns of communication and interaction within the family setting. Cohen, P. N.
