Discussion Two Hello everyone, After watching the TED talk, I think that the most influential impact on families in terms of social and economic institutions is technology and the workforce/education. In the TED talk, Nezih Guner talked about the improvements in household appliances and household technologies (microwaves, washer/dryer, computers, etc.) all impacted female labor supply. Guner stated, “what these appliances did was they reduced the room for specialization in the marriage"(2012). Women being able to work outside of the home sort of shifted one of the traditional prerequisites for marriage – people were no longer marrying for economic benefits; they were marrying people they liked. The introduction of computers and women being able to attend college and have their own careers also impacted families. Due to industrialization and these household appliances, it was no longer as important for families to have lots of children. I think all three of the theoretical perspectives could help you understand how families have adapted to this shift. However, if I had to choose, I guess I would have to choose functionalism. Functionalism emphasizes the importance of social institutions, including families, in maintaining equilibrium in society. Family adaptation is seen to ensure the smooth functioning of these institutions amid evolving social and economic landscapes. TEDx Talks. (2012).
