1 Running head: RESEARCH TOPIC Research Topic: Identify and Defend Ashlee T. Byers RES 825 – Theories of Inquiry Grand Canyon University April 5, 2021
2 RESEARCH TOPIC When deciding on a potential topic for my dissertation upon the completion of my PhD in Psychology with a concentration in Industrial and Organizational Psychology, I am drawn to the mental health in the workplace. The most interesting topic that I have found is regarding the plight of women, especially women of color, and the challenges that they face in regarding stereotypes at their place of employment. My research will surround personal identification and perception and how it has an effect on the work climate and those involved. The first article studies and investigates workplace gender harassment, and how the effects can be detrimental to job satisfaction, can foster frustration, and also promote general job stress. The participants were 160 expatriates that currently reside in nearly 25 host countries, working overseas. The findings resulted that the females in the study experienced more workplace gender harassment than their male counterparts. There was also a significant correlation between this harassment and their frustrations and an effect on job satisfaction. Future studies on this topic could focus on the manifestations of the harassment, be centered around the harassment and its perpetrators, or even some effective countermeasures for the harassment (Bader, Stoermer, Bader, & Schuster, 2018). The second article studies the theories of modern discrimination. It researched the intersection of interpersonal incivility and cyber incivility and the mechanisms in which race can lead to perceived discrimination, with the purpose of extending an understanding. The study participants were 408 adults, considered to be full time employees, that responded to an online survey. The study’s findings revealed that nonwhite employees often experience subtle forms of discrimination through cyberspace and others uses of technology. One limitation identified in the article was the collapsing across racial groups, meaning that those not considered white were all
3 RESEARCH TOPIC grouped together in the study as a racial minority instead of individual groups (Daniels & Thornton, 2019). The third article was a qualitative study of the challenges and problems that married women professionals often faced in the private sector and how these factors have affected their decisions to leave the workforce. Semi-structured, audio recorded interviews were conducted with ten married women professionals. The findings of the study revealed that the women leaving the workforce are often more affected by the “pushed out” factors than the “opt out” factors. Pushed out factors can include long work hours, schedule inflexibility, and high work volumes while the opt out factors are more psychological and biological. The limitations to the study were the group identified. By focusing on only married women in the private sector, the views and voices of the qualitative study were more specific and could not be generalized (Lim & Rasdi, 2019). Being a young professional in the workplace is quite difficult, but often times adding the extra layers of being a woman, and more specifically a woman of color, can prove even more intense. Placing focus on issues that are often faced when attempting to climb the ladder of success is necessary in hopes to avert or rectify the unleveled playing field. Discrimination is something that that many people face daily based on gender, race, sexual orientation, creed, or religion. Bringing awareness to the issues of discrimination, harassment, and incivility are essential to ensuring the mental health and comfortability of all people in the workforce. When employees are of sound mind and body, the employers benefit. Promoting a healthy work environment can in turn increase workplace productivity, reduce absenteeism, and increase the economic gains associated with production. Anxiety, stress, and depression can often impact a person’s well-being if not handled and been properly addressed. External factors
