Clinical Field Experience C: Special Education Teacher Observation and Feedback Shontrell Hughes Grand Canyon University EAD – 530 Professor Rundhaug February 14, 2024
Collaborative Experience Summary My mentor allowed me to observe and evaluate the special education teacher for this assignment. The evaluation consisted of two observations, and the second was done in the resource classroom and the other in the regular education setting. The two educators worked together to prepare the lesson. As a special education teacher, she was responsible for helping students with their learning process. The teacher's materials and background information would allow her to provide the best possible support to the learners. During our regular observation session, we were able to observe a special education teacher teaching a lesson in the classroom's resource room. This was an opportunity for me to see how the teacher interacts with the students. After talking about the various factors that could be considered to improve the delivery of education in both situations, my mentor and I agreed that we should work together to make the most of this opportunity. We discussed various methods that could be used to improve the delivery of education in both situations. One of these is by using hand signals to communicate the progress of the lesson. We also talked about the time needed to process information. We then developed a plan that will be presented to the teachers during a post-observation conference. The two of us agreed that we should provide both positive and constructive feedback. The goal is to end up with more positive feedback. Evaluation Tool
The evaluation tool used by the CCSD is the one approved by the State of Louisiana. The objective of this process is to identify areas of improvement and strengths among certified teachers. In New Orleans, the goal of the evaluation is to acknowledge the strengths and weaknesses of certified teachers. The evaluation and supervision of teachers in Orleans Parish is an official tool used by the school district to promote professional growth. It allows certificated teachers to develop their personal skills and knowledge. Besides promoting professional growth, the evaluation process can also be used to identify areas of concern and develop strategies to improve the performance of teachers. There are five major domains included in the evaluation process. One of these is professional practice. According to the Danielson framework, 67% of the evaluation's results will be based on professional practice. Professional practice documentation will be presented by teachers as part of the evaluation process. About 33% of the final teacher evaluations will be based on the achievement growth measures. These include proficiency benchmarks, state assessments, and end-of-course exams. As part of the evaluation process, teachers will be presenting data related to achievement growth in their portfolio. This information is gathered and reviewed during a post-conference meeting. Teachers can also access the evaluations online through their e-portfolio. To ensure that they have a record of all the details related to their professional practice, teachers are required to download a copy of their own files. PSEL Standard 5 and Future Practices According to the PSEL, educators should promote positive relationships between adults and students. Those enrolled in special education programs are either on a 504 or IEP. Individuals with special needs require specific attention and care. Unfortunately, many of these students do not meet their learning needs when they fall through the cracks. This is why it is
