Social Media on Adolescents As social media continues to expand and grow in many dynamics, there are things that we must understand as we reflect the impact it has on children. Social media influences children in positive and negative ways. The impact children receive from social media helps shape them throughout life and their development as a child. Prolonged use of unsupervised social media raises many concerns of behavior and other risks factors as well as many negative influences on children from the use of social media. Children can spend a lot of time on social media unsupervised which results in possible lack of sleep, mental health issues, their safety and social development with others. Social media use by children should be limited and supervised. Positive and Negative Influences of Social Media on Children Explore the varied impact that social media has on children, delving into both positive and negative aspects that shape their experiences and development. Social media platforms have both positive and negative influences on adolescents. I have seen for myself how it could be beneficial, and I’ve also seen the negative impact it could have. Many things can be gained from social media such as creativity, connecting with friends, and social support. Social media also teaches us how to network, promote support for others, and express ourselves. However, there is a negative side to social media like bullying, metal health issues and safety risk. Behavioral Concerns and Risk Factors: Investigate the behavioral concerns and potential risk factors associated with prolonged, unsupervised social media use by children, addressing the impact on their behavior and overall well-being. The characteristics of children as they evolve into adulthood can be heavily influenced by social media. There is also the concern of bullying. Bullying and acting out is one of the top issues that arise with social media usage. Bullying only social media stimulates from people added to your platform and the things you post. It spreads once something is posted and most of the time you cannot get away from it as it may be stuck there forever. There is also the risk of influence in behavior. Children are susceptible to act, speak or even dress like those on social media because of the lack in development of their brains at such a young age. There is currently a trending topic on how adolescents can pursue their parents to let them shop at Sephora, Lulumon and Ulta at such a young age. The problem presented here is that adolescents want to fit in with others. Negative Influences on Children from Social Media Use: The direct impact of social media use like reduced face-to-face interactions increase risk for depression according to recent research by Steinsbekk, Nesi, and Wichstrøm (2023). Lack of face-to-face interactions with other people can create unwanted situations and change the dynamics of their relationship with other
people. This also increases the risk of stressful interpersonal events (Steinsbekk, Nesi, and Wichstrøm 2023). Meaning it then makes it hard to hold interpersonal relationship and conversation because the child may not be used to being around others in person. This can lead children to searching for reassurance and feedback through social media therefore creating a pathway into bullying, social comparison, and body image concerns events (Steinsbekk, Nesi, and Wichstrøm 2023). Effects on Sleep, Mental Health, and Safety: Analyze the correlation between unsupervised social media use and its impact on children's sleep patterns, mental health, and safety, highlighting the potential risks and consequences. There are some studies that find increased risk of social anxiety and generalized anxiety higher in girls than boys according to Steinsbekk, Nesi, and Wichstrøm (2023). Research has also shown the difference in gender of how girls and boys use social media platforms. Girls tend to use more photo based social media platforms rather than boys (Steinsbekk, Nesi, and Wichstrøm 2023). Many factors like self-regulation and susceptibility to peer pressure are also impacted by social media usage. Due to the access people have to social media there is higher risk of developing mental disorders according to Keles, B., McCrae, N., & Grealish, A. (2020). Another rising issue is the peer pressure of drug and alcohol use which is influenced by social media as well. This can unfortunately lead to addiction, overdose, and/ or physical harm (Wu, L., Yao, L., & Guo, Y. (2022). The Importance of Limited and Supervised Social Media Use: Discuss the necessity of imposing limitations on children's social media use, emphasizing the role of supervision in fostering a healthy balance that safeguards their well-being and social development.
