1 Strains Affecting Wealthier Individuals Corina Kaplan Eastern Gateway Community College COR203: Criminology Prof. Corrin February 4 th , 2024
2 Strains Affecting Wealthier Individuals Strain theory relative to economic status proves to be an extremely relevant relationship. Both classic and general strain theories focus on the idea that economic status plays a big role in stressors and strains that may cause certain behaviors to occur. These major strains can include feelings of anger and frustration that overtime create an environment where crime is often the corrective action chosen (Piquero, 2016). Throughout the reading economic status as it relates to strain theory will be discussed with particular focus on strains affecting wealthier individuals. Stressors must come from somewhere and according to Open Oregon Pressbooks, stressors can be seen in three separate ways. These include the failure to achieve a positive stimulus, the removal of a positive stimulus, and the confrontation of a negative stimulus. Examples of this can include job loss, criminal victimization, discrimination, bullying, and more. Strains affect people differently, if a person with poor social control is affected by a strain and they see the strain in a high magnitude and being unjustified they are more likely to commit a crime. When individuals lack proper coping mechanisms, they may also use crime as a way to escape strain, stress, or pressure (Fedorek, 2019). Most researchers will say that only “poor” individuals are affected by strains and crime coping, but some argue that “richer” individuals do fall victim to crime coping due to stressors, it just reflects through different crimes. More wealthy individuals are more likely to engage in corporate and state crimes. These crimes refer to those committed by corporate officials to benefit a corporation, human rights violations, and more. Two of the bigger strains affecting richer individuals include comparing themselves to others and pursuing economic goals outside of a reasonable reach. There will always be a higher goal, or someone to look up to no matter economic status, and while everyone is encouraged to “shoot for the stars” this can backfire and cause relative deprivation (Piquero, 2016).
3 In short it can clearly be seen that strain theory has many ties to economic status. While poorer individuals may suffer greatly through numerous strains, wealthy individuals feel the heat as well. Those who are wealthier may feel pressures from job loss, discrimination, criminal victimization, and more which often under some circumstances lead to crime coping. Those who are wealthier will be seen comparing themselves to higher succeeding individuals which sets an unrealistic expectation, this applies a lot of stress on an individual which can lead to illegal choices to obtain goals.
