1. One of the most prominent social learning theories is the differential association theory. Discuss the major assumptions and principles of this theory. - The differential association theory is Edwin Sutherland’s theory. This theory is believed to be that people learn their behavioral traits through their environment. Meaning that criminal behavior is a learned trait, just like everything else is learned. People will start violating the law simply by associating with individuals who guide people into crime. This happens through communications, social interaction, and relations. 2. Travis Hirschi links the onset of criminality to the weakening of the ties that bind people to society. Identify and discuss the elements of the social bond and how they impede crime. - Hirschi believes that there are 4 elements to social bonds. These being attachment, commitment, beliefs, and involvement. He believes that making healthy attachments helps. That without attachments, it is more likely a child will have more issues with authority. He also believes that if a delinquent is not involved in activities including sports or clubs at school, that they will have time for crime. People that live close, often have similar beliefs, with this, its less likely for one to be involved in criminal behavior. Finally, commitment. This involves effort, time , energy to be put into standard society, like a job, and education. One would not be so quick to mess up everything they have by committing a crime, deterring them from the route. 3. Discuss the key points of labeling theory and the consequences of labeling. - there are 4 key point of the labeling theory. 1) crime is defined by those in power. 2) behaviors that are considered criminal are highly subjective. 3) both positive and negative label involve subjective interpretation of behavior, 4) not only acts are labeled, but so are people. Crimes that involve murder and rape are bad because people have labeled it to be. Ones acts are not only being labeled, but also people. Dealing with consequences of labeling can ruin ones reputation. 4. If peer relations are so important to deterring criminal behavior, should we place most of the blame for delinquency on the peer groups? In this essay, briefly discuss the link between peers and delinquency. - I do not believe that the peer group should get most of the blame of delinquent behavior. Though peer groups do play a role, as peer pressure is difficult to get out of. If a peer group is engaging in criminal behavior, then it is more likely more will follow. But there are outside sources that could influence one’s decisions. These include internet access, media, television shows/movies.
