Qualitative Article Review Monica D Piper Grand Canyon University CNL-540: Research Methods & Program Evaluation Dr. Kaufmann July 26, 2023
Introduction Utilizing and/or Implementing either a quantitative or qualitative method constitutes as one of the very first requirements that are required to be completed within the field of research counseling. The researchers will typically make decisions based on what works best for the study after deciding on the design and how to test the study's theory. Knowing the differences between quantitative and qualitative research will help you choose the approach that is best for your counseling research. Following a reading of the article "Virtual Reality Group Therapy for the Treatment of Depression: A Qualitative Study on Stakeholder Perspectives," this paper will discuss how to make decisions in a qualitative research design, apply qualitative methods to counseling outcomes, and use qualitative methods. Qualitative and Quantitative Research Reports The methods and types of data collected differ between qualitative and quantitative investigations (Hoover, 2021). Quantitative studies require computer-processable data, whereas qualitative research depends on sources that show human viewpoints and specifics on how people think or behave in society (Hoover, 2021). Which methodology is best for a project can be decided by understanding the differences between qualitative and quantitative research approaches. The first step in understanding the framework of qualitative research is to understand the purpose of qualitative inquiry (Balkin & Kleist, 2017). Understanding human behavior in terms of occasions, situations, circumstances, experiences, or acts, as well as actions and experiences, social and psychological processes, and unanticipated events of one's experiences,
are all included in qualitative research (Balkin & Kleist, 2017). In quantitative studies, objective and unbiased data is used, the conclusions are stated clearly with figures and numbers, and the data may be used to provide immediate benefits (Hooper, 2021). Qualitative Research Design The method of acquiring data and the consciousness of the research participants are both benefited by the qualitative research design. The goal of this qualitative study is to "assess the acceptability of a proposed VR group therapy (VRGT) intervention based on cognitive-behavioral group therapy (CBGT)" (Dilgul et al., 2021, p. 2), according to the research paper "Virtual Reality Group Therapy for the Treatment of Depression: A Qualitative Study on Stakeholder Perspectives" (p. 2). Semi-designed interviews were utilized to assess the sponsor's perspectives during the study's creation, execution, and analysis (Dilgul et al., 2021). By using a practical approach, it was possible to explore potential areas of interest and give applicants a chance to speak about topics that were relevant to their assessments (Dilgul et al., 2021). The completion of a qualitative technique provides insightful and/or offers information into the various factors that therapists and depression patients believe may affect and/or influence the acceptance and uptake of the VRGT intervention (Dilgul et al., 2021). Although some virtual meetings were taken place, the study's drawback, vulnerability, or. problem is the fact that the interviews were conducted or carried out shortly prior to the coronavirus pandemic (Dilgul et al., 2021).The use of video conferencing has increased and people have become more accustomed to virtual connections since the coronavirus pandemic,

which may have altered people's opinions of VRGT (Dilgul et al., 2021). Due to ethical and practical restrictions, participants were not allowed and/or prohibited from interacting or converse with one another during the interviews. This led to the theory that the lack of interactions may have been influenced by the participants' responses after they had only seen a demonstration video on what VRGT would entail (Dilgul et al., 2021). Applying qualitative Methods to Counseling Outcomes For the purpose of examining the viewpoints of the participants in discussion groups and interviews, the qualitative technique of research allows the descriptive and linguistic use of words or language (Chalmers & Cowdell, 2021). In order to learn the optimal strategy for a scenario, a qualitative study can help in understanding a person's experience and views about the experience (Chalmers & Cowdell, 2021). Understanding one's experiences, perceptions, behavior, processes, and meaning more fully is possible through a qualitative study (Chalmers & Cowdell, 2021). When to Use Qualitative Methods The growth and/or development of knowledge and understanding in sociology and political science has been significantly impacted by qualitative methods, according to research by Rose et al. (2012). Qualitative research methods allow for the use of studies that focus on particular attitudes, feelings, circumstances, and actions of individuals (Rose et al., 2021). The key to gaining the faith of experts who believe that research depends on the presentation of statistically verified data is to vouch for the research's consistency (Rose et al., 2021). In a mixed-methods qualitative approach, statistical data gathered using quantitative tools might be
used (Rose et al., 2021). However, employing a qualitative approach might frequently be the primary or only method of collecting and analyzing the data (Rose et al., 2021). Conclusion An exploratory, interdisciplinary and suggestive study that reveals enhanced views of one's attitude, opinions, behaviors, relationships, and experiences can be supported by significant data from both qualitative and quantitative research. Using qualitative techniques allows for common strengths and shortcomings as well as significant components when analyzing the outcome of therapy.
