1 Journal Entry Three Clarice Fels Department of Social Work, Missouri State University SWK 480-898: Social Work Integrative Seminar Dr. Michele Day February 19th, 2023
2 Event This week was more intense than any of my weeks so far. I shadowed the case manager for the Laura’s Home apartment program and visited all residents on that side. Everything went well except with one resident. While going to visit their apartment we noticed alcohol out all over the place. We then had reason to look in the fridge for alcohol and found more of it. This made the resident terribly upset and for our future attempts on interaction they refused to meet with us much less open their apartment door for us. We could have easily just used our spare key to go in, but my boss said, “if we can just walk in whenever we want it makes it feel less like their apartment and makes them feel less independent.” Which made complete sense because we do not want them to feel that way, it would go against the code of ethics now that I think about it. Integration of Social Work Knowledge, Values and Skills Knowledge: When we had to take that alcohol out the resident seemed shocked that we were doing so. “I spent so much money on that and now you are taking it?” We had to tell her that we were going to take it. We would not have gone looking for it, but she had just left it out on the counters for everyone to see. That then gave us probable cause to look elsewhere (like the fridge) for more of it. When anyone drinks underage it makes the adults responsible for them liable to anything that may happen to them. So that is why we had to take it. NASW Code of Ethics 1.01 Responsibility to clients was the first thing that came to my mind. We have a responsibility to them to keep them safe and not have them seriously hurt themselves. ("Social workers' ethical responsibilities to clients," n.d.)
3 Values and Standards of Ethics: Like I said above, I let them know that I cannot in good conscience let them keep this alcohol in their apartment. I told them that we as their legal guardians are responsible for protecting them from themselves. Code of ethics 1.01 was my framework for this conversation. Skills: I attempted to have them reflect and put themselves in our position as guardians. I told them that they could get seriously injured or get alcohol poisoning and need to go to the hospital. Letting them know that people die all the time from aspirating on their own vomit when too inebriated. They were not hearing any of this, not looking in our direction. That is when I used the blunt truth regarding aspiration to help them understand the seriousness of the situation. Throughout the week we tried to go knock on that resident's door repeatedly on different days that week and they refused to answer. So, we had to send a different staff member to check in on that resident since they did not want to see my boss and I. I was planning to talk to this resident asking them what they felt in that moment (using reflection) asking them what direction they want to go from this, (goal setting) and how I can help them achieve this. Personal Reflection (Cognitive and Affective Processes) Personally, I learned that I need to give residents space after upsetting them. Even if it is in their best interests. That for a week or so afterwards to then start pushing back if they still will not see a particular staff member. Letting them know that there will be many times in their life where they must put up with people they might not necessarily like. That is just part of being an adult, learning the ability to act cordially in situations that are not ideal. If they can learn this skill, they will increase their chances of being able to survive in the professional world. It was hard to know that I upset them but at the same time I knew it was in their best interest to confiscate it. There is nothing I would do differently the next time I encounter this situation.
