Journal Entry Four 2 Event This week was deffinately one of the calmer ones out of my practicum so far. But still eventful to say the least. I learned a lot but I cannot really name a specific “event”. This week was spent helping residents use their clothing voucher money to go shopping for clothes. The residents children are in care of the state BUT were being released from the care of the state this past Wednesday. Ouyr resident essentially had two days to buy all of these clothes for their children. Our resident is a mother of two and themselves along with their two kids are in care as well. But they are under different enteties. Our resident is under Laura’s Home scattered sites, but their children are under Department of Social Services Childrens Division (DSSCD). There was a misunderstanding between our resident and their caseworker, their caseworker said we would be paying for all of the clothes and being reimbursed by the caseworker. However my boss told me that we were not going to pay for the chilfren’s things too, that our resident would have to do that out of their own pocket and then her caseworker would reimburse them. I told all of this to our resident and they misunderstood because the first store we went to they got a bunch of clothes for their kids and when we got up to the register they said “you ready?” (I did not know if they were shopping for themselves or their children since this was in the store Ross.) I awkwardly explained that we were not going to pay for the childrens clothes. That they would have to be reimbursed by their caseworker themselves. They handeled it well suprisingly, and it went just fine the rest of the trip. Integration of Social Work Knowledge, Values and Skills Knowledge: In the NASW Code of Ethics it stresses the importance of the principle of human relationships. “Social workers understand that relationships between and among people are an important vehicle for change. Social workers engage people as partners in the helping
Journal Entry Four 3 process.” "Code of ethics: English," n.d. I did my best to be clear and upfront, because they as the client deserve the absolute truth. Which also goes along with the principle of “dignity and worth of a person” and the whole first standard 1.01-1.17. We owe it to our clients to be this way for them. Values and Standards of Ethics: I tried to follow the 1.03 of the NASW Code of Ethics “Informed Consent” It’s not in a theraputic setting but I was doing my very best to bring to my clients attention that we would not be paying for their children’s clothes along with their own. However this still got misunderstood. Next time I come across a situation like this I will be more straightforward because even though I explained it to them, they obviously did not get it. This is a learning experience for me and my level of communication that I need to work on. Skills: I used a lot of reflecting internally, because this was not the clients fault. This was the miscommunication between me, my boss and the caseworker. Unfortunately this was just something that my client got the grunt end on. It was frustrating to me because I felt like “What is the harm in paying for the childrens clothes? We would be reimbursed, unless my boss knew something I did not. If this has been said to our organization before and we lost out on $400 plus dollars. But it was neither confirmed or denied for me so I was just left feeling confused as to whatmy resident was supposed to do. It is one thing for an administrative person to tell their subordinates to tell their resident something they did not want to hear, and it is another thing to be the one to say it to the residents face. I felt like the bad guy. Personal Reflection (Cognitive and Affective Processes) Personally I learned to always make sure the other person is on the same page as you, it will save a lot of time and embarassment. My resident was extremely nervous and frustrated that they were getting told two diferent things by two different people. On top of being out $800. The

Journal Entry Four 4 anxiety of not knowing if they were going to get that money back I cannot imagine. The residents work so hard for their money and especially ones with children that money is a make or break kind of thing. Yes they get help but for her case worker and my organization (Good Samaritan Boys Ranch) really dropped the ball with this one. Us by not having contacted the case worker ahead of time and the caseworker assuming we would buy the residents and the children’s clothes. If I were in the same situation I would be mad and overwhelmed to say the very least. I stayed professional with the client and listened to them vent about how confusing and frustrating this was. About how now their daycare is having issues with getting subsidy worked out. I have learned about communication, and what rights the client has, to us this is a job but to our clients it is their life. I was pretty frustrated at my boss at how this was handeled because I thought we were supposed to help people. Especially if we would get reimbursed, it is just plain ridiculous.
