Select a client (Juan, Vaughn, Crystal, Scott, Margaret, Kyle, or Sarah) presented in the Riverbend City: Career Counseling media piece and describe at least two potential challenges pertaining to culture and diversity that may factor into their presenting career or job-related concerns. In your discussion, incorporate a relevant research article from the Capella Library that supports your claims. For this discussion, I chose to discuss the challenges that Juan may be facing. Juan is a 51-year- old Latino male who recently retired from the Air Force. During Juan’s session, he opened up about his latest job interview, sharing the dilemma of culture and diversity. Juan shares about the interviewer showing a surprised expression when Juan advised about having obtained a bachelor’s degree. This is often misconstrued by individuals having been in the military force. Individuals who serve or have served are very often placed into a box that they “took the easy way out” pertaining to their career choices. Tang (2018) describes the occupational stereotypes as generalizing groups of people solely based on the certain characteristics to their career. This causes such an impact as it limits the individual’s career choices, unallowing the client to feel they have a wider selection in the workforce. Another challenge Juan seems to be facing is due to his ethnic background. Being that Juan is Latino, Juan expresses about the interviewer’s lack of professionalism of assuming Juan would divulge being from another country and later dismissing Juan’s attempts at speaking about the job position at hand.
