2 Film Reaction; Power and Control: Domestic Violence in America The film “ Power and Control: Domestic Violence in America” is a comprehensive and timely exploration of the persistent evidence of domestic violence in our society. The film was released in 2010 and was directed and produced by Peter Cohn. Domestic violence statistics in the society today have shown a sharp increase in the violence against women around the country. It is evident that there is a widespread ignorance of the issues except when there are celebrity incidences. However, there are more cases of death caused by spouses in the past years ( Sharma, & Borah, 2020) . Power and Control is a film documentary that present a way of addressing a life and death issue in the time of an urgent crisis ( Cohn, 2010) . The film comprehensively explores the physical and emotional abuse evident in the society today as it is evident from the Story of Kim Mosher, a Duluth and a mother of three. The story tells a story of how Kim left an abusive husband and opting to break a marriage she had vowed to hang onto at all cost. This had been triggered by the fact that the husband was yelling and hitting the children, forcing her to drive away from ten years of emotional and physical abuse. The film is significantly has been able to connect to the topics and ideas that have been presented in the course as well as the ideas generated from sources. From the film we can be able to understand the extent at which domestic violence can have detrimental impact to the victims. The film shows the struggles of Kim as she searches for a job and seeks to get childcare services, getting affordable housing and attempting to raise the children safely ( Cohn, 2010) . The Duluth model represented in the film is an important multidisciplinary program that helps to coordinate the actions towards helping to deal with domestic violence and have a more effective outcome. Domestic violence has depicted from the film has a number of negative impacts such as broken marriages, challenges in raising children as well as the negative emotional and social impacts to
3 the victims. From the film we can note a number of ways through which domestic violence can be dealt with and how different stakeholders and organizations can work together towards ensuring that they gain solutions for the issue. In relation to the class of human aggression nd violence, “ Power and Control: Domestic Violence in America” provides a basis for having a better understanding of the issue and how human aggression can be associated with domestic violence. For instance, from the film, we are able to identify the shocking persistence of violence against women in US ( Cohn, 2010) . This provides us with a shocking realization of how society approaches the issue of violence. Also, the film looks closely on the debate related to the Duluth approach of dealing with domestic violence. The film therefore can be used as a powerful training and outreach tool that can be used for boosting the state of domestic violence in the society today. There are different factors that relate to the issue of human aggression and violence ranging from personal issues, institutional forces, mental and social factors as well as past experiences ( Haller, 2020) . Both aggression and violence have negative effects and they determine how people interact effectively with one another. Therefore, management of violence and aggression ca be achieved through redirection, mediation and establishing boundaries essential for peer relationships. These strategies are important to help in solving aggressive tendencies from being repeatedly experience in families. On the other hand, considering factors such as alcohol and drug abuse when dealing with aggressive and violence tendencies can be an important strategy for achieving solutions. The information obtained from the film is an important representation of the key experiences and evident in the society today for different groups and individuals. Data indicates that different women in the society toady are experiencing both emotional and physical abuse from their spouses. On the other hand, incidences of child abuse, violence against intimate

4 partners as well as abuse of the elderly are common problems being reported in the USA. More than 10 million people today have reported to be affected by family and domestic health abuse around the country. From the film we are able to identify the negative consequences of domestic violence which are clearly evident from different victims in the society. For instance, abuse victims seek to avoid ending the relationships, they feel isolated, depressed, helpless and embarrassed of their situations. At the same time abuse victims fear judgements and stigmatization which forces them to remain in the abusive relationships. These and other impacts may significantly affect their wellbeing as well as those affect their overall productivity in work and interaction with other people. As evident from the case of Kim it is important to advocate for different ways through which people can work and solve the problem of domestic violence. At the same time, it is important to encourage domestic violence victims to end the abusive relationships and start caring for their wellbeing and that of their children.
