7-2 Initial post Hey everyone and happy Thursday! The field of study I chose is Criminal Justice and the research I focused on is the stress and mental health of police officers and why they don’t always seek help. Every research approach modifies the questions posed and the kind of data that is collected. I asked questions about my topic based on what kind of information I was hoping to produce and how each methodology obtains data. I saw that the field of criminal justice utilized more qualitative research based on various approaches for this research topic. Though mixed-methodology research is also an option, I think qualitative research would be more successful because of the data collection. Surveys, questionnaires, focus groups, and one-on-one interviews are the most popular methods used to gather qualitative data. Again, these approaches, in my opinion, are employed because they give the research a human element that is necessary when studying the social sciences. My preliminary investigation revealed trends in the research approaches. When posing a qualitative topic, researchers usually use surveys or interviews as a method of gathering data to obtain participants' more detailed and intimate answers. To gather statistical and numerical data, surveys and observation are frequently used in research projects when a quantitative research issue is posed. Finally, to address a mixed-methods research issue, the study must include both quantitative and qualitative data collection strategies. Your research question must be quantitative if you wish to perform research that collects numerical and statistical data. The kind of research question you ask will dictate the type of study you undertake. Your research topic needs to be qualitative if you wish to collect more detailed data, including opinions and personal experiences. I have seen that a greater proportion of studies in my subject of study—criminal justice—have employed qualitative approaches as opposed to quantitative ones. However, my research topic focuses on the mental health of officers and if they seek mental health treatment for stress-related trauma they experience while on duty. While parts of this study could be pulled from research from a medical standpoint different fields of study tend to favor different methodologies when studying the same topic due to the nature of their work.
