2 Week 3 Responses to Videos Episode 3 of the movie titled RACE—The Power of an Illusion pays attention to the institutionalization of racism with emphasis on how American institutions and policies serve to benefit the white population. The movie reveals that the current wealth gap between the white and non-whites is not because of arduous work on the side of whites. On the contrary, the whites have a remarkable advantage because the existing institutions and policies allow them to access more opportunities that translate to increased wealth. Unfortunately, the same policies that serve as an advantage to the whites represent a significant disadvantage to the non-white population. As a result, the movie demonstrates the unfair system's adverse effects that allow the development of inequalities and multiple disparities between the white and the non-whites. The movie introduces a vital conversation on whether the wealth gap will disappear if society ignores race. The movie demonstrates an important reality: race is not a biological characteristic that translates to sub-species among the current population. On the contrary, race denotes a social construct with markers such as race, hair texture, and skin color that serve as a significant identifier of different populations. The existing public policies have given a deeper meaning to these markers, a factor that fosters inequalities. In Episode 3, the narrator characteristically states, "… we can see how our institutions and policies have assigned racial identities and reinforced racial inequality throughout the 20th century". Based on this statement, it is apparent that the United States established institutions and policies that benefitted the white population. For example, the movie highlights the effect of real-estate practices and federal policies that allowed white homeowners to have unlimited access to loans. At the same time, the non-white population did not enjoy any of these benefits. Such practices, fully reinforced by government funding, created a difference in equity with the whites enjoying a significant privilege due to such policies. These practices excluded non-
3 whites and condemned them to a world of disadvantages, making it difficult for them to exhibit upward mobility. As a result of these policies, African Americans only have about an eighth of the total net worth that the whites have accumulated over the years. The movie explicitly demonstrates that such policies and institutions have been the leading cause of disparities and unfair advantages for the white population. In housing and real estate, the worth of properties in white neighborhoods is significantly higher than the value of property in black neighborhoods. The institutionalization of race categorically creates significant advantages for the white population while automatically excluding minority groups such as African Americans. In my current community, race-related disparities remain evident because the white population enjoys access to quality healthcare services, health insurance, and preventive care. On the other hand, the system automatically makes it difficult for African Americans to access quality healthcare services or health insurance coverage. The lack of formal employment among African Americans explains why they cannot afford health insurance premiums. The government policies that were dominant in the twentieth-century shave continued to foster inequalities by ensuring that people of color have lower incomes and limited access to opportunities. Ignoring race can register significant changes, but the disappearance of the wealth gap will need the establishment of policies that support the redistribution of wealth.
