We know it's happening, and even hear or see the events. But who's taking action? I can stand here and give you a list of statistics about this issue, but is that all it is? A statistic? Sadly enough, people look at this endless crime as just a figure or percentage, we're shocked at first but nothing more. So today, I am taking the first step, a step towards justice, a step to end the struggle, and a step to save our nation. And yes, I'm not anyone special, I don't study the topic, nor am I a survivor of domestic violence myself. But I'm here to tell a story. I'm here to make a change. And I'm here to encourage all of you to do the same. I'm going to share an experience I had. Something that I've regretted and hated myself for since, knowing that help could've been sought earlier. A few years back, I was catching up with a family member and noticed a faint bruise on her face. Naturally, I asked her what had happened but she just brushed it off, told me it was nothing but a sport injury. Weeks progressed, and the bruises became worse and worse, but I stop questioning. To me, she still seemed the happy go–lucky girl I knew and loved, the only difference were these markings. But let me tell you, sometimes the people who seem happiest, are actually hurting the most. By speaking out and helping those who have been abused is the hardest but most effective way of limiting domestic violence . Lots of people, abuser and non–abusers blame alcohol and substance for their violent actions. While this may be true it's not right to say flat out. Yes 93% of the persons causing violence on their spouses were alcoholics (Roleff, Tamara). Alcohol and drugs are in hankers but never and excuse and/or cause. Abuse is a choice (Introduction). Being a society of people who find it the easiest way to get out of a situation is blaming something on another thing. Substance abuse seems pretty common and generic. There are a lot of things that go into abuse before alcohol is brought into the picture. The fact that a spouse is jealous or controlling even just angry is magnified by the effect of alcohol (Roleff, Tamara) it makes everything a whole lot worse. The abuser being affected by alcohol is also a way so the abuser and the person being abused have something to blame it on (Roleff, Tamara). As stated before we are a society of giving out blame. It is also stereotyped that a man is the one to be the abuser. This is not true. Men are almost equally abused or taken advantage of. "Historically there has been a culture of permission that accepts and condones violence against women" (Dr. Jerkins, White, Joseph). As a society we live by this. Statement of the Problem Women's shelters, also called domestic violence shelters, serve as a community housing resource for individuals who need to escape abusive situations. Past maltreatment could range from physical violence to psychological or even financial control. AOTA (2011) defines domestic violence as: "pattern of coercive behavior designed to exert power and control over a person in an intimate relationship through the use of intimidating, threatening, harmful, or harassing behavior." Oftentimes, there have been several layers of abuse happening simultaneously. While residents who end up at shelters have typically lived through traumatic experiences, their specific ordeals and personal reactions to them will vary. The people seeking shelter are survivors who have taken the first step towards changing their lives for the better or people in the middle of crisis. There are a plethora of psychosocial and mental health concerns for women's shelters populations. These identified general areas of occupational impairment include: daily life activities, work performance, home management, parenting, and leisure participation; cognitive functioning including decision–making, judgment, problem–solving, and following directions; money management, task initiation, self–confidence, coping skills, stress management, and interpersonal relationships (AOTA, 2011) as well as the effects of traumatic experiences on mental health and independent living skills (Davis & Kutter, 1998).
