Please review the following article: Doing Family Therapy as a New Social Worker: The Do's and Don'ts. While this article mentions family therapy, please consider the skills of a beginning Social Worker/Case Manager as you read this article. After reviewing this article, please consider the following in your discussion post: Please share your thoughts on how you can apply this information as a Social Worker. What do you think are some of the benefits/challenges in working with families? To receive full credit, you will need to post one substantial post. Each discussion post should be a minimum of 250 words or one page. Provide two substantial responses to your classmate’s posts. These responses should also be substantial and provide thoughtful reflection. Your initial discussion post should be posted by Wednesday and your two responses due by Sunday. What I found the most interesting in this article was the reminder that social workers are not miracle workers. It is not the job of a social worker to fix everything and wrap it up with a nice little bow to give to clients. Therapy is something that can be ongoing. It may never have a proper resolution, just breakthrough moments. As a new social worker, sometimes getting caught up in wanting to make everything better for the clients is easy. Finding the answer to all of their problems is not the solution, though. Social workers guide families to learning self advocation skills and towards choice. Sometimes, people need to realize the options available, and helping them discover their independence is the goal. We do not want to cause them to become dependent on us for the answers; we want to show them how they can learn growth techniques they can utilize independently. As a social worker, we need to realize this from the beginning to save ourselves from unnecessary stress, guilt, and burnout. Working with families can be both challenging and beneficial. It can be challenging because so many different dynamics and personalities are coming into the situation. Schedules must be worked around, feelings taken into consideration, and misunderstandings regarding what is essential and what is not are just a few of the challenges that would have to be navigated. The benefits might be that the family may develop stronger bonds as they work towards resolution together or the whole picture may come out more quickly when several people share. Helping the families see that they are all on the same team would be essential to healing together.
