Running Head: LESSON 7 ASSIGNMENT 1 Lesson 7 Assignment Name: Institution:
LESSON 7 ASSIGNMENT 2 Lesson 7 Assignment 1. Explain the difficulties in accurately defining a gang, gang member, and gang-related crime. Difficulties in defining a gang, gang members and gang-related crimes originates from the factor that no universal definition exists in the U.S to define the term “gang” for numerous reasons. In definition, people can assume that gang means youth gangs when in particular it defines other forms of gangs such as street gangs comprised of older people (Taylor & Fritsch, 2020). Prison gangs, crime groups composed of organized adults, terrorist factions and motorcycle gangs are all gangs. It is, therefore, important to understand that there are different types of gangs and the crimes also vary significantly depending on the form of gang (Taylor & Fritsch, 2020). For instance, terrorist factions are gangs that aim to cause massive mayhem to nations while prison gangs are only after exercising dominance against other prison members that are deemed “weak” but they can also be extremely violent and cause fatalities. 2. Describe the major responses to gangs. The major responses to gangs constitute the prevention, “intervention” and “suppression” that all produce great efficiency. Prevention is an efficient method that facilitates the protection of youths from joining or associating with gangs. The community takes a central role in mentoring all the youths in areas recording the highest risks of gang activities (Decker, 2017). Mentorship from community organizations to the youths depicting
LESSON 7 ASSIGNMENT 3 early signs into associating with gangs is also an effective prevention method. Intervention constitutes the community and government efforts to help youths from detaching with gang activities (Decker, 2017). In extreme cases, youths that commit crimes as gang members are taken into rehabilitation after undergoing prosecution in criminal courts if they are adults and juvenile courts when they are youngsters. Suppression is an extension of intervention and it aims to ensure that the police have taken the mantle to suppress the operations of gangs by arresting delinquent youths that are gang members (Decker, 2017). 3. Explain the concept of a chronic juvenile offender. A chronic juvenile offender describes an offender that has committed many violent offenses as well as other non-violent offenses disproportionately (Kennedy et al., 2019). There are usually many factors that contribute to this delinquency.
