I have always wanted to help individuals and families but after reading the article Doing Family Therapy as a New Social Worker: The Do's and Don'ts. This make me really thing about how I can help a family from different backgrounds and age groups. So here are my thoughts on how I can apply this information as a Social Worker. First, I would sit and get to know the family by listening to them and then i would ask them about some of their family history and how their culture is like. Not every culture believes in in counseling. I know in my family some of my family members do not believe in going to see a social worker even though they have anger issues and does not know how to handle them. What do you think are some of the benefits/challenges in working with families. So, to me the benefits of working with families are sitting with the families getting to know each and every one of them in different ways like their personalities or their likes or dislikes. The challenges would be getting the families to learn how to listen to each other because in some families not everyone wants to take turns talking and showing their feelings. But in order for me to help the families that come to me for my help I have to encourage them to let each of them to sit back and let everyone take a turn to vent or talk about what is bothering them and then help them come up with a solution.
