2 Discussion Over the years, the Juvenile justice system in the United States has changed to grant the juveniles essentials of due process. Before it was established towards the end of the 19th century, juveniles were being treated as adults and subjected to adult courts for crimes committed. The establishment of the juvenile justice system was a significant step towards separating and diverting youthful offenders from the adults’ criminal courts for crimes committed. The establishment of the juvenile court system was to encourage rehabilitation of juvenile offenders rather than retribution for crimes committed ( Schmalleger, 2011) . Since its establishment, there has always been a growing need to pursue dulcification of some juvenile criminal behavior, especially those involving serious crime. In some cases, this has led to the waiving of juvenile rights and trying youthful offenders involved in serious crimes as adults in adult courts. When juveniles are treated as adults, they undergo the process of “adultification” where they are imprisoned or sentenced together with adult offenders. There are several risks to the adultification process which include subjecting juveniles to adults’ treatment which may scare them for life, significantly altering their ability to rehabilitate and become better adults. Instead of juveniles growing up to be responsible adults, the adultification process might turn them into hardened criminals ( Antolak-Saper, 2020) . There are numerous problems that the justice system has as it tries to respond to the perceived need for adultification of juvenile criminal behavior. One of the main problems includes the questioning of the role of the juvenile justice system as well as its goals.
3 The juvenile justice system was established to mainly deal with juvenile criminal behavior, thus, by seeking the adultification process, it deviates from its main goal which includes rehabilitation of the juvenile offender. Another challenge facing the adultification process it’s how to address the mental health issues related to juveniles being subjected to adult prisons ( Antolak-Saper, 2020) . Due to their underdeveloped and immature minds, restricting juvenile offenders together with adults can have adverse negative mental impacts on the youths. Thus, as the juvenile justice system pursues the adultification process, it faces the challenge of addressing the issue of mental health that affects juveniles. Christianity supports the creation of a juvenile justice system process that creates a more just and human method or approach to treating youthful offenders in the United States. The Bible in the book of 1 Corinthians 13:11 says, “When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put the ways of childhood behind me” (New International Version Bible, 2011). This proves that a youth's thinking is not similar to that of an adult. Therefore, treating a youthful offender as an adult is wrong as they may not understand what is trying to be accomplished. Thus, youthful offenders must not be subjected to the adultification process as their talking, thinking, and reasoning may be greatly impacted which can affect their adult life.
