2 Discussion Question 1, A dominant culture is the mainstream culture characterized by the beliefs, norms and values of the majority group in the society. A co-culture is a small distinct group within a large society whose common characteristics in beliefs, norms and values differ from that of a dominant culture. Question 2, Growing up, I always felt different from the majority of others. My family has some distinct values and beliefs based on our Mexican origin. The Mexican heritage made us quite different from the White majority in the United States. So, I would only identify my culture as a co-culture rather than a dominant culture. Question 3, The values, attitudes, beliefs, and customs that differentiate my culture from that of the larger society in the United States are mainly from the Spanish culture that my ancestors copied from. I come from a Spanish-speaking family in Mexico, and we still use the same language when communicating with other Mexican families in the United States. American English is widely adopted as the primary language in the United States. Our foods are quite different from that of the dominant group in the United States. In my culture, greetings are highly valued; no one can pass the other without greeting them, even if they are total strangers. In the United States, greetings are optional. Our customs depend on the need to live as a family and care for each other in terms of needs. This is rarely the case with the dominant culture in the United States, as everyone's life is all about individualism and survival. Virtually everything in Mexican
3 culture differs from the American culture. This explains why many Mexican families will always be closely attached despite being surrounded by the majority of whites. Question 4, My assessment has not changed, as most of the features discussed about the difference between my culture and the dominant culture still hold to date.
