1 Current Issues Journal Tambria Davis University of Arizona Global Campus ECE 315 Language Development in Young Children Verlinda Ruble June 3, 2024
2 Current Issues Journal I found the video to be intriguing. I hadn't previously encountered the terms "digital natives" and "digital immigrants," but I could clearly see the distinctions between generations. Before the widespread use of technology, social skills were more developed in both children and adults. However, due to the prolonged use of technology and screen time, there has been an increase in behavioral challenges. I have observed increased anxiety stemming from the social isolation caused by devices such as iPhones, laptops, and iPads. It appears that children struggle more without their electronics. In the past, education predominantly relied on the experiential and intellectual prowess of the instructor. However, a significant transformation has occurred with the rapid integration of technology into the educational landscape. Children now engage with electronic devices both within and beyond the confines of the traditional classroom setting. This encompasses a wide range of interactive computer games, educational applications, and access to the internet, providing students with a diverse array of learning resources and tools. In considering the implications for my future role as an educator, I understand the importance of staying current with technology. I recognize the need to learn the "language" of digital natives and understand their unique communication styles and slang. I believe it is essential for me to stay updated on the latest developments and news events, both on a global and local scale. Being knowledgeable about current affairs allows me to maintain a well-rounded perspective and make informed decisions. I will use this information to be mindful and engaging to capture and maintain the attention of each group of students that enters my classroom. This will provide me with the
3 opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of each student's individual needs and interests, allowing me to tailor my teaching to better engage and support them in their learning journey. I will also utilize this information to develop plans for parents to use at home. Being a parent myself, I understand the challenges of teaching children about topics you may not feel confident in. Therefore, implementing a program to support the parent and child at home would be incredibly valuable. The term "digital natives" refers to individuals who have grown up using digital technology, while "digital immigrants" are those who have adapted to digital technology later in life. As educators, it's imperative that we understand and embrace the communication styles and preferences of "digital natives" to effectively connect with and teach them. We must familiarize ourselves with their digital culture and language to ensure that our teaching methods are relevant and engaging for this generation. Understanding their language is crucial for reaching and engaging with them effectively.
