1 Final Project Milestone 4: Policy Alternative Tyesha L. Glenn Walden University SOCW 6361 Social Policy: Analysis and Advocacy Dr. Richardson April 21, 2024
2 Final Project Milestone 4: Policy Alternative Many social issues affect the lives of millions of people around the world. Social issues impact how people live in the world and how others see them or how they may see themselves. For instance, the social issue of homelessness, what do you assume that individuals who are homeless think of themselves or even how society views them? Policies are implemented in order to change the dynamic of how social issues may alter a person’s livelihood. Child abuse and neglect are very critical social issues that must have adequate policies to ensure that the well- being of children’s lives is safe. In the state of Tennessee, there is a policy that requires everyone to be mandated reporters if they see or suspect any case of child abuse or neglect, and criminal charges may result if an individual fails to report (Reporting et al. & Training, n.d.).  Exploring alternative policies to enhance the reporting system and addressing the gaps in protecting at-risk children is much needed. The policy alternative is the implementation of enhancing the child abuse and neglect reporting system. The purpose of the alternative policy is to improve the efficiency and success of reporting incidents of suspected child abuse or neglect, establishing timely interventions, and protecting at-risk children (Gilbert N., 2011) .  Alternative policies require changes at both the local and state levels. On the local level, more public awareness and education regarding individual reporting must be needed. The public needs to be aware of when it is appropriate to report potential child abuse or neglect. Not only is it essential to ensure others are aware of when to report, but community members should also be continuously encouraged that reporting is more of a positive approach versus individuals trying to stay quiet due to the fear of how others will see them. On the state level, changes include increasing resources surrounding professional training regarding mandated reporting and enforcing stricter penalties for people who do not comply with the law.
3 The policy alternative of enhancing the reporting system certainly aligns with social work values. The NASW states, “Social workers challenge social injustice. Social workers pursue change, particularly with and on behalf of vulnerable, oppressed individuals and groups of people” (2024). Children are a very vulnerable population that requires professionals, community members, or any adult person to keep them safe. Advocating for children and their safety is essential. By implementing an enhancement of the reporting system, the alternative policy seeks to ensure the well-being and overall safety of children, which in return is the social work profession's principle, value, and belief. The feasibility of the alternative policy was affected politically, economically, and administratively. The policy will have costs when it comes to training programs, structural improvements, and public campaigns to raise awareness of child abuse and neglect. Regarding the administrative aspect, the policy will encourage different agencies to improve their systems when it comes to reporting so that it may be done more effectively. Also, the policy has the opportunity to display challenges related to resource granting and other issues. The alternative policy also meets the policy goals, including social equality, redistribution of resources, social work values, and ethnics. Internally improving the reporting system, the alternative policy’s mission is to ensure that all children of any cultural background or social class. The policy will also prioritize resources toward preventing child abuse and neglect. With every policy, different things could hinder the development of any new policy. The forces against the alternative policy may come from individuals or groups of people concerned with potential false reporting and the increased workload of agencies. There are consequences for failure to report, but there are also punishments for false reports. Although there are
