SOC-213 2-2 Assignment: Personal Bias March 11, 2023 1. Is complete objectivity impossible to achieve? Why? Or why not? Complete objectivity is not possible to achieve. "Absolute objectivity is perhaps impossible to achieve because perception is always subjective. Being objective means you are not influenced by personal feelings, interpretations, or prejudice, but make judgments or decisions based on unbiased facts, dispassionate examination, and deep observation." (2019b) 2. How do culture (religion, learning appropriate social responses, etiquette), environment (where you were born, friends, family structure), and personal characteristics (race, gender, socioeconomic status) affect objectivity? All of these things affect objectivity because they all shape who we are as people. The way we were raised influences almost everything in our daily lives. When we are used to viewing things a certain way, it sometimes makes it hard for us to see things from another person’s perspective. I believe religion is a hard one because many people are raised with these beliefs and they have been engraved in their minds. When someone else has completely different religious views, it makes it difficult to understand why those people do the things they do and act the way they do. Someone who was raised in a household that never really had financial struggles can sometimes find it hard to relate to people who were raised in poverty. They just do not have the personal experience to help them relate, so they have to try extra hard
to understand the way others were raised so that they can empathize with them and be better able to learn about their lives and current situations. 3. Should a researcher strive for complete objectivity? Why? Or why not? A researcher should not strive for complete objectivity because it’s basically impossible. They should, however, try their absolute best to get as close to complete objectivity as possible. "The only way in which we can strive for ‘objectivity’ in theoretical analysis is to expose the valuations to full light, make them conscious, specific, and explicit, and permit them to determine the theoretical research. A more balanced view of objectivity, both as a method and as an ideal, must be considered. Objectivity, if it is to remain at the core of the ethos of the social sciences, requires social researchers to be conscious and remember what Putnam (2002: 145) termed the last dogma of empiricism: the presupposition that "facts are objective and values are subjective and never the twain shall meet." (Ahmed, 2017) 4. How can you limit personal bias using the sociological theory you selected? The theory I selected is interactionist theory. I believe there are many ways to limit personal bias while using this theory. I believe this theory focuses on individuals, so it would be easier to understand how each individual's upbringing and current circumstances have molded them into the person that they have become. I think by better understanding this, we can be better able to put our own biases aside and relate better to others circumstances. One person in a neighborhood can be raised completely differently from someone two doors down. Everyone is different; I think scientists need to keep this in mind and not try to categorize people based on broad assumptions. By doing this I believe it would help us to put our own feelings and beliefs aside so they we can understand others.
