Module One Question 1 Do you have any healthy habits? What role have culture and environment played in the healthy or unhealthy habits that you have formed? People's habits are influenced by their culture and environment. This is especially true for their diet and exercise habits. When most people in a community value healthy eating and physical activity, those who do not may be treated differently, even if they have similar physical activity levels. Module One Question 2 Choose a society from the map. Within that society, characterize one of the social science principles we identified in this learning block. As a reminder, the social science principles we focus on in this course are: social roles, social institutions, social norms, and beliefs and values. For example, what is a social role that exists in Okinawa? Who occupies this role? The inhabitants of the Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica follow a culture of living at a leisurely pace and avoiding stress. They also emphasize maintaining close-knit families and building strong connections with their neighbors to promote the community's overall well-being. Module One Question 3 Provide an example of the environment influencing the population in an area of increased longevity. Then provide an example of the population in that area influencing its environment. The Nicoya Peninsula in Costa Rica has been noted for its ability to promote longer life expectancy compared to other regions. This can be attributed to the natural beauty of the environment and its sustenance. The lack of access to fast and heavily processed foods also contributes to a healthier lifestyle. Furthermore, the locals tend to walk everywhere, which is an additional factor for longevity. Access to public healthcare that is paid for allows even the poorest individuals to receive care, which is another significant contributor to their well- being. Module One Question 4 Think about factors affecting your lifestyle in comparison to the areas of increased
longevity. Characterize two social science principles in your day-to-day life. Use the two principles that you did not describe in response to the earlier question. For example, you could describe some social norms in your day-to-day life. Social norms in my life move rather quickly. It's common to grab a quick meal, even if it's unhealthy, which can negatively impact your overall well-being. In the United States, holding someone's gaze for too long is generally considered impolite, as it may make them uncomfortable. However, for some people, this is how they connect with others on a deeper level, while for others, it can make them feel uneasy. Module One Question 5 From a social science perspective, what are three factors that shape your day-to-day life? For example, you could describe some factors that influence your social interactions, your access to certain foods, your day-to-day activities, the pace of life in your area, etc. I tend to engage in social interaction through technological means, especially over the last three years, due to the impact of the pandemic on how I interact with my peers. This, in turn, has altered how individuals interact with their peers and family. My daily activities are significantly affected by the physical environment in which I reside, particularly during the summer months. The temperature can rise to almost 100 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and drop to around 70 degrees Fahrenheit at night, necessitating careful planning of my activities and limiting the types of activities that can be undertaken. Regrettably, my social interactions are subject to seasonal variation. Module One Question 6 Identify two social science issues related to war. The foremost issue associated with war is economics. The economies of the nations involved in wars vary. While one country may stand to gain economically, the losing nation would suffer from economic downfall due to the tragedies of war. Another significant issue is religion. Many past wars have been initiated due to substantial differences in the beliefs and practices of different faiths. Those at war may even resort to destroying religious artifacts that are held in high regard to try and shake the beliefs of others. It is important to note that these issues are not exclusive, and numerous other factors can initiate a conflict. However, economic and religious aspects are often the most prevalent and influential. Therefore, it is essential to understand the nature of these issues and their potential impact on the global community, particularly in a business or academic setting.
Module One Question 7 Identify two social science issues related to education. Education is a domain that intersects with two major social science issues, namely racism and poverty. Research has revealed that areas with higher rates of poverty are typically occupied by minority populations, which is indicative of systemic racism and the unconscious biases that may exist among educators and other stakeholders. This creates a cycle that perpetuates poverty and racial inequality, as the two issues are interdependent. Therefore, improving one issue requires addressing the other and vice versa. Module One Question 8 Recall: what are the five social institutions that we are examining in this course? This course will examine five crucial social institutions: Religion, Education, Government, Family, and Economy. Module One Question 9 Identify the social institutions discussed in this reading about India. The article on India covers all five major social institutions: family, religion, government, economy, and education. Module One Question 10 Choose one of the five social institutions. Describe some of the factors that have influenced this social institution in India. The family institution is one of India's five fundamental social institutions, wielding significant influence over the Indian social fabric. The authority within families rests with the Elders, while traditional social norms dictate that the entire family resides under one roof. However, contemporary trends indicate that some families are transitioning from the traditional family dynamic, opting for a more modern lifestyle with only their spouse and children. Families increasingly embrace marrying for love rather than adhering to conventional family obligations.

Module One Question 11 Use the reading about social institutions in India to identify two social science issues that could be researched further. The interrelation between the economy and family dynamics has been a subject of interest for scholars and business professionals. Dive deeper into these two social institutions to understand the causes and effects of larger and smaller families. Further research could provide valuable insights into the complex relationship between economics and family structures. Such insights would be of immense significance in the academic realm and have practical implications in the business world. Module One Question 12 Describe two social norms in Dubai noted in the reading and explain how these social norms may differ from those of the culture that you grew up in. The assigned reading has identified two social norms that differ from the culture I grew up in. The first is modest clothing choices. In the United States, wearing shorts, tank tops, and bikinis is customary, while in Dubai, this practice is prohibited due to religious laws. As a result, if an individual wears a bikini in Dubai, they may face legal repercussions and be required to pay fines. The second social norm pertains to how males greet each other in Dubai. In the United States, toxic masculinity is pervasive, and males do not consider greeting a friend in this manner. American culture does not usually involve kissing cheeks or embracing one another when greeting, except when customary in the immigrants' country of origin. During my childhood, I lived in a South American country where social norms dictate that individuals greet each other by kissing both cheeks. This was my first introduction to the cultural diversity that existed worldwide as a child, as I never witnessed this custom in America. Module One Question 13 What factors shape the social norms in Dubai? Name at least two, and describe how they shape the social norms. Religion and government shape social norms in Dubai, with religious beliefs influencing government policies and laws. While this dynamic has preserved traditional cultural practices, it has also sparked debates about the extent to which religious values should dictate social norms. Despite this, Dubai has tolerance and inclusivity through initiatives such as the
Ministry of Tolerance and the “Year of Tolerance" campaign. As Dubai evolves, it is necessary to balance traditional practices with diversity and inclusivity. Module One Question 14 What factors influence your society's social norms? Name at least two social norms that exist in your culture, and describe the factors that influence them. The existing political beliefs in government have a discernible influence on the social norms in the city where I reside. Politically speaking, our city is situated as a large Blue city in a red state. The liberal mindset prevalent in our city engenders a more accepting and tolerant approach towards various walks of life, particularly the homeless population. Being raised in Southern Arizona, we are inherently predisposed to hold more liberal and accepting views, which allows us to encounter and interact with people from different backgrounds and cultures with an open mind. Module One Question 15 Based on the reading about Dubai, identify two social science issues that could be researched further. As previously indicated, further research is warranted regarding the intersection of religion and government. Specifically, it is imperative to examine the extent to which religious ideologies influence government laws and policies and whether such influence is in the best interest of the populace or subject to the biases of religious thought. This inquiry is critical to ensuring that government and its policies serve the needs of its citizens, free from undue influence or partiality. Module One Question 16 Now choose a social science issue listed above, or pick one of your own. Adopt the social science perspective to ask a question about this issue from the point of view of a psychologist. What is a question that a psychologist might have about this social science issue? A psychologist may ask how a Muslim individual views those who are not Muslim.
Module One Question 17 Now choose a social science issue listed above, or pick one of your own. Adopt the social science perspective to ask a question about this issue from the point of view of a sociologist. What is a question that a sociologist might have about this issue? How do strict religious policies affect citizens and their relationships? Module One Question 18 Now choose a social science issue listed above, or pick one of your own. Adopt the social science perspective to ask a question about this issue from the point of view of an anthropologist. What is a question that an anthropologist might have about this issue? What led the government to uphold strict religious laws, and how have these laws evolved? Module One Question 19 Who occupies the social role of spiritual leader in most Papua New Guinean kinship groups? Within the cultural framework of Papua New Guinea, the absence of a designated spiritual leader is notable. It is widely held that all adult community members possess knowledge of sorcery and spirituality, which encompasses various aspects such as healing, crop cultivation, and romantic relationships. This understanding underscores the importance of shared knowledge and equitable participation in spiritual practices across the community. Module One Question 20 What are the societal expectations for a woman's social role in Papua New Guinea? What influences these expectations? In Papua New Guinea, women must adhere to certain societal norms, including cooking, tending to garden crops, and looking after livestock. Such expectations often limit the social roles available to women, typically defined by their roles within the family, whether as daughters, mothers, or elders. These gendered expectations can have a significant impact on the lives of women, shaping their experiences and opportunities in ways that are not always

equitable. It is essential to recognize and address these social norms to ensure that women can participate fully in society and achieve their full potential. Module One Question 21 Within your own society, what social roles do you occupy? What other social roles could you occupy, if you chose to? How much choice does your society give you to occupy different social roles? How much flexibility do you have to fill that social role differently than society expects? In my community, my responsibilities encompass multiple roles, including those of a mother, wife, daughter, student, and caregiver. While I could potentially take on the additional role of an employee, given my current commitments, I cannot undertake another responsibility with the requisite level of attention and dedication. Societal norms permit individuals to undertake as many roles as they can handle. However, gender-related expectations may impact one's choices in this regard.
