Eternal Family
REL 200C
Unit 3: Video Study
Before Watching the Videos
Step 1:
Read the following paragraph from The Family: A Proclamation to the World, and provide the information requested.
"
In THE PREMORTAL REALM, spirit sons and daughters knew and worshipped God as their Eternal Father and accepted his plan by which His children could obtain a
physical body and gain earthly experience to progress toward perfection and ultimately realize their divine destiny as heirs of eternal life.
The divine plan of happiness enables family relationships to be perpetuated beyond the grave. Sacred ordinances and covenants available in holy temples make it possible for individuals to
return to the presence of God and for families to be united eternally.”
1.
How does the doctrine of Pre-mortality impact or influence your understanding of the Plan of Salvation?
Honestly, having that knowledge that we are eternal being and lived with God before we were born on this earth, is amazing to think about premortal life. I can understand more His plan of salvation, that we lived with God as His spirit children, means we were a one big family, and we have a work to do, and gain experience of this mortal life that we can go back to our Father’s home who is in heaven. It is amazing to think about premortal life, His love and trust toward us enabled us to have physical bodies so we can come to this earth. He knew that would be doing fine, away from Him. That is how we as earthly parents feel, when we send our children to colleges or universities to get higher education and worldly knowledge. Even if they go away from us, we know that our children will do good, and grow. God the father has trust in us that when we come to this earth, we are going to be good. Now it is up to us how we exercise our agency to gain earthly experience and become capable to return to Him.
2.
Paragraph three mentions a “plan” that we accepted before we came into mortality. What kind of plan was it? How would you explain the plan to another? (simplified)
Heavenly created all of us in the premortal realms as his spirit sons and daughters. He created “plan of happiness” that salvation and exaltation would be available to everyone of his children, an idea which offered an eternal hope to every soul, regardless of their weaknesses and failure in mortal life because his ultimate desire is to bring to pass the exaltation for each one of his children. According to my understanding, the council in heaven included all his sons
and daughters and the opposition, the Lucifer and his people, father laid out his plan so they would all know that what was his plan, what would happen, and what would be the end results if they would help him carry out his plan. Lucifer opposed the father’s plan but we all accepted
his plan of happiness which provided us an opportunity to learn through our earthly experience
and return to heavenly father’s presence in heaven. 3.
How does obtaining a physical body help us gain experience and progress toward perfection? How do physical strengths and weaknesses contribute to our growth?
We were already living in heaven as spirit sons and daughters, but we did not have bodies with

flesh and bones. Also, we didn’t have knowledge of good and evil, nor the experience of mortality. In order to grow toward progression and become like father, we needed to have bodies and a place where we could progress toward eternal destiny that we chose in premortal life. God’s plan of happiness helped us obtain physical bodies so we could gain earthly experience. If we remained spirits, everything would have remained in a state of innocence, we
would not have had earth nor physical bodies. So, when God created Adam and Eve they were in the state of innocence. Physical body was necessary to obtain happiness and joy, misery and pain so having body means an opportunity to go through earthly experience and develop toward perfection.
4.
Why participate in ordinances? What role do they play in our progression and our ability to gain Eternal Life?
Ordinances and covenants are part of sacred ceremony that we perform in the church and in the
temple by priesthood authority for our exaltation. We make commitment with God when we receive ordinances, and by honoring these ordinances and covenants, we are enable to receive certain blessings and power to save ourselves and others to receive eternal blessings that he has
restored for us. I like Elder Scott’s quote, it says, “I believe the Lord prepares in premortal life the spirits who will come to earth so that those who are obedient to His counsel and seek direction of the Holy Spirit can manage whatever environment they live in”. (Elder Richard G. Scott, “To Understand and Live Truth” Address to CES Religious Education, February 4, 2005). All of us who came to this earth fought adversaries to come to earth. So, when we receive ordinances and make covenants, we take upon us his name, and prepare ourselves to keep and honor those covenant, as elder Scotts said whatever the environment is we will manage it because we have God the father and His son Jesus Christ by our side to help us overcome the such environment.
While Watching the Videos
Step 2:
Watch the three
video segments linked on Canvas (I-Learn). While watching the videos, provide answers
to the following questions.
Questions:
1.
What doctrines or principles (core concepts) were you taught during these video segments?
1- God’s plan 2-. Earthly experience, the plan of happiness enables family relationships to be perpetuated beyond the grave.
3- Progression toward eternal life
4- Ordinances and covenants
2.
What impressions came to you? What were you personally taught during this Video Deep Dive session?
I felt Heavenly Father’s love while I was watching the video segments. He tells us over and over to follow his commandment so we can live with him. He sacrificed his only son to save all of humanity. He knew we could go other way but regardless of our weaknesses, failures,

and struggles he provided a plan for salvation and happiness for us. It gives me comfort and peace knowing that God created this earth, and His plan provided His spirit children a place to experience mortality that was a necessary step toward His desire for all His children to have eternal life. We will grow by choosing the right and by obeying God’s commandment because this life is to prepare us to live with him again.
