1. On What grounds did Bellarmine oppose Galileo's conception of the universe?
According to the second quoted paragraph of the passage, Bellarmine's opposition comes from his perception that Galileo's theory of the sun being the center of the universe and the earth circling it, versus the opposite of the sun circling
the earth "is a very dangerous thing, not only by irritating all the philosophers and scholastic theologians, but also by injuring our holy faith and rendering the Holy Scriptures false."
He goes further by suggesting that modern writers agree that the sun revolves around the earth. He seemed to believe that it would have better if Galileo would have said that he did not understand scripture when it came to this topic rather than imply that the Holy Scripture is false. Bellarmine uses King Solomon from the Bible as an example by presenting Solomon's words about how the sun rises and sets and goes back from which it came. He reminds us that "Solomon, who not only spoke by divine inspiration but was a man wise above
all others and most learned in human sciences and in the knowledge of all created things, and his wisdom was from God." These things were the grounds for Bellarmine's opposition.
2. Of what crime does the Holy Court find Galileo guilty?
In the Indictment and Abjuration of 1633, the Holy Court brought fourth several allegations against Galileo. The Holy Court accused him of things like "holding as true a false doctrine taught by many, namely, that the sun is immovable in the center of the world, that the earth moves, and also for having pupils whom you instructed in the same opinions." These were just some of the few things stated against him from the Holy Court. His views were thought of as mere opinions. Galileo was guilty of "heresy, that is of having believed and held the doctrine (which is false and contrary to the Holy and Divine Scriptures)." Basically he was convicted for going against their religion and daring to think outside the box. This is proven because throughout this passage it is
stated many times that the ultimate crime is Galileo going against the Holy Scriptures.
