1 Bible Interpretation: Acts 9:36-43 Ronnie Dailey Liberty University Bible 104 B27 Professer Beauchamp 6/12/2023 A. The passage Acts 9:36-43 begins by portraying Tabitha as a significant character in Joppa by noting, “In Joppa, there was a disciple named Tabitha, she was always doing good and helping the poor.” The passage further discusses Tabitha’s good character by highlighting good acts of charity when she works hard to provide for the widowed in Joppa. Tabitha’s sudden
2 illness leads to her death which pains those she had helped in the community (Marshall 2019). Surprisingly, they get word of the disciple’s presence in Joppa and seek their help by bringing Peter to the room where Tabitha’s lifeless body is lying. Peter prayed for Tabitha and softly commanded her to rise. This act was made known throughout the town, and everyone was happy and amazed at God’s good deeds. This act proved to the community that God was real, and by raising Tabitha, he brought hope and faith to Tabitha’s community. The author tries to highlight through this passage that people should be firm in faith by living a life of importance in society. From the passage, we learn that knowing God and living to do things that please him leads to eternity, just like Dorcas. Tabitha was a humble servant and follower of God; her absence in the community could leave a considerable gap and significant impact on her community. However, the widows she helped did not give up on her as they tried hard to convince Peter to help bring her back to life (Marshall 2019). This passage implies that people should do good deeds to serve God so that God will not abandon them in their times of need, just like Peter and Tabitha, humble and genuine servants of God. Dorcas served God by dedicating her time to bringing love, hope, and kindness to the members of her community, including the orphans and the widows. Through her passion and acts of charity, God’s kingdom flourished in Joppa such that when she died, God used Peter, his servant, to bring Tabitha back to life so she could continue serving the lord (Wright,2023). The main point communicated in this passage is that creating a close relationship with God by helping the needy in the community can bring light and hope in times of trouble. In this case, Dorcas humbly served God by helping the needy, which made their faith in God flourish, such that when Tabitha died, God gave Peter the power to raise her back to
3 One principle from this passage is that God can use his power to provide hope for those less advantaged in society. He liberates widows like Dorcas, orphans, and the poor from death and sickness since they have no one to depend on. Numerous biblical stories show how God used his power to help those in need and show saving abilities (Wright, 2023). For instance, the healing of Aeneas and the raising of Dorcas are similar miracles performed through the help and power of God. References Marshall, M. T. (2019). Grace and Works: Acts 9: 36-43.
