2 Prophet Jeremiah One would say that prophets tended to gravitate towards times of crisis since it was during that time that God revealed Himself. This was also a time that demanded crucial decisions to be made; thus, God would use prophets as His spokespersons (Arnold & Beyer, 2015). Essentially, through this crisis, they would communicate God’s message through warnings and guidance. In particular, they would give warnings, make promises and indicate the goals that man has to attain as a way of motivating the people to repentance. Perhaps this could be linked to the fact that the crisis opened God’s people’s eyes to that they were not doing the will of God and needed to change their ways (Arnold & Beyer, 2015). This way, prophets would be used in leading people on how to lead a righteous life that pleases God. Prophet Jeremiah lived through an era of great crisis in Judah. Perhaps this could be linked to the fact that, in his entire ministry, he is called to pluck up, break down, build and plant. The central idea of his ministry was to confront, at the same time, comforting the people and issuing them guidance on how to live God’s way and stop worshipping pagan idols. When Jeremiah began his ministry, Nebuchadnezzar II of Babylon asserted his power on Judah. This way, God’s people suffered under his heavy hand before their city could be destroyed and the citizens exiled to Babylon (Balentine, 1981). In the course of these events, Jeremiah would warn the people of God’s judgment and destruction while at the same time recording his own experience of the pain and conflict that the announcement brought (Nyman, 1984, pp. 105–118). In his prophecies, God was passionately begging his people to return to him and be saved, and this could be illustrated by his message of God’s promise to restore the Israelites as a people. To begin with, crisis serves as a reminder that there is God. Essentially, during this time, one can result to prayer, which in turn helps to rebuild one’s faith while also remaining focused
3 on the Lord. This is because, like in the time of Jeremiah, through the Israelite’s tough times, God would use his prophets to give guidance to His people on how they need to live. This implies that crisis can offer guidance on how I need to rely on God for all provision (Balentine, 1981). Another critical lesson is allowing God to control one’s situation. This will be attained by talking to Him through prayer, reading the scripture to get to know Him better, listening to Him and giving him thanks.
