1 Weeks 2 Assignment Religion Professor Harris 11-5-2022
Week 2 Assignment Religion 2 When it comes to the medical field religion and ethics can be some tricky things and can become very complicated. As others believe what they believe in, and you might have your own thoughts on religion depended on how you were raised. “The rule of relationship between religion and ethics is about the relationship between revelation and reasoning religion can be based in some measure on the idea that God or a divine entity reveals insight about life and its true meaning” (Donahue, 2006). For example, the text that is written in the Bible, Koran or Torah. Ethics on the other hand come from a human perspective that is more based on reasoning and logic. Using a rationale to verify and understand what is not just. The ethical standpoint does not rely on a divine entity but these “principles are upheld for their value in promoting independence and responsible individuals that are capable of making decisions that maximizes their own being as well as others” (Donahue, 2006). Today we would be discussing 2 ethical dilemmas and what is the relation between ethics and religion while also formulating and investigating the relation between the two. Also, for each case we will be looking at if a natural law ethicist would agree with what I have to say is the ethical form of conduct and why or why not. The first ethical dilemma that I have chosen to reveal is , J ohn Doe has decided to clone himself. He is sterile. He cannot find anyone to marry him. He wishes to have children. He knows that he will not be able to love a child that is adopted or not connected directly to him biologically. He will be making use of a new procedure that involves taking his skin cells to produce a twin. The twin starts out as an embryo and grows into a child. The child in this case will have the same genetic information as John Doe. John Doe and his child will be twins.
Week 2 Assignment Religion 3 After first reading this ethical dilemma, I thought it was very interesting to think that someone who is sterile, deciding on having their own kid which would be a twin of John doe was preposterous. But nevertheless, in these times and days I suppose anything is possible. “Religion can be defined as, human beings’ relation to that which they regard as holy, sacred, absolute, spiritual, divine, or worthy of especial reverence” (Britannica, 2022).  In other words, a religious person would believe something along the lines of that God is the Almighty and that his creation should not be changed or squandered. As God or a divine entity knows best and, in some religions, knows the future and everything that you need. If John is religions as it does not state that he is or isn't then changing what God has already created to be so would we a sin. Thus, going against his own religion. When looking at this as an ethical standpoint John would be ethically you proceed with his cloning ask for the reasoning is logical. He wants a kid of his own this would technically be a kid of his own literally. Natural law is a theory in ethics and philosophy that says, “that a human being possess intrinsic values that govern their reasoning and behavior” (Estevez, 2022). In other words, the natural law maintains the rules of right and wrong or inherit to the people and not created by society or judges. Because of that Joe John crowning himself we're not being a morally wrong act that is his decision because he is his own person not ruled and regulated by the society or courts in judges this is his decision thus the ethicists would agree. My second scenario is, Joe and Mary are a couple. Before becoming sterile, they had a child. This child died of a rare disease. Joe and Mary miss their child terribly. They have heard that there is a new IVF procedure that can ensure that they can have another child. However, their religion forbids using IVF. This is also a interesting scenario especially when you put yourself in this families predicament and thinking of how they would feel struggling with

Week 2 Assignment Religion 4 religion and something they desperately want. The relation between ethics and religion here is that the religion that Joe and Mary are under does not allow IVF. If they were to go along with this decision it would be on the ethics side of things because they are going against their religion to get this procedure done which in turn violates the commands of God. Compared to the other scenario where he was unsure if their religion allowed cloning or not it is clearly stated in this one that it does not allow IVF. A natural law ethicist would agree with going through with the IVF because it would be a decision of Joe and Mary on their own terms. Having idea would be a rational decision and would give this couple a good life.
