In this second discussion, find one radical statement concerning the historicity of Jesus Christ that has been published in the recent past (within the last ten years). Feel free to take your research back a few years, but more recent research is better. You may find that news magazines such as Time and Newsweek are easily accessible sources, but these are just suggestions for a starting point; do not necessarily limit yourself to these two popular magazines. Summarize your findings, including a title, the source, the author or proponent of the radical statement concerning Jesus, and a synopsis of what was said. Feel free to be flexible here; the main thing is that others in your class have enough information to enter into the discussion. As a class, discuss what the media is saying about Jesus, and how this is impacting society, both in the secular and religious realm. It is encouraged that you discuss the particulars related to the “radical things” discovered by the peers. In your discussions, seek to draw out the fallacies being promoted about Jesus, and attempt to refute these fallacies for the practice and edification of your peers. Post-First: This course utilizes the Post-First feature in all Discussions. This means you will only be able to read and interact with your classmates’ threads after you have submitted your thread in response to the provided prompt. Submit your thread by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Thursday of Module 3: Week 3. Title: "The Christ Myth Theory and Its Problems" Author: Michael Gleghorn Source: Probe Ministries This article provides an overview of the Christ Myth Theory and addresses its main arguments and criticisms. It examines the historical evidence for the existence of Jesus Christ. A radical statement concerning the historicity of Jesus Christ is the assertion made by the Christ Myth Theory, which claims that Jesus Christ is entirely a mythical or fictional figure and did not exist as a historical person. Advocates of this theory argue that the Gospel accounts of Jesus' life and teachings are purely symbolic or allegorical narratives and should not be taken as historical accounts. This theory challenges the mainstream consensus among historians and scholars who affirm the existence of a historical Jesus based on various sources, including early Christian writings, non-Christian historical references, and archaeological evidence. The Christ Myth Theory posits that Jesus was a religious construct created by early Christian communities, combining elements from various mythologies and traditions of the time. It is important to note that the Christ Myth Theory is a minority viewpoint within academia, and the majority of scholars consider it to be an extreme and unsupported position. A bible verse that affirms the existence of Jesus as a historical figure is found in the New Testament, specifically in the Gospel of Luke: "In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the
town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David." (Luke 2:1-4, NIV) This passage, which describes the circumstances surrounding Jesus' birth and the journey of Joseph and Mary to Bethlehem for the census, is often cited as an example of a historical event involving Jesus and his family within a specific historical and geographical context.
