Passage: Acts 19:11-22
A. I have read Acts 19:11-22 in both a formal translation (NASB, NRSV, ESV, or CSB) and a functional translation (
NIV, NLT, or NCV). Highlight the correct answer. Please use the translation provided in your digital library or found at Biblegateway.com

B.
Having read the passage in both formal and functional translation, list at least 2 similarities and 3 differences between the way both translations cover this story. These similarities and differences should be related to the text itself rather than the translation. For example, an observation like, “The formal translation is harder to read” is not an acceptable observation because it deals with the translation itself rather than the text. You may list as many similarities and differences that you find providing that you meet the minimum amount for each one.
1.
Similarity – Both translations acknowledge that Paul is being used to preform Gods miracles. Both also acknowledged that they were not minimal or ignorable miracles but that they were extraordinary. That articles of fabric that had touched him could be used to cast out evil spirits, specifically aprons were the garment that was mentioned in both of the translations.
2.
Similarity – In both translations in verse 13 it is stated that those who were Jewish and trying to rid people of evil spirits that they call on the name of Jesus “who Paul preaches”
3.
Difference – The NIV version does not specify the Jews who were working to chase away evil spirits as exorcist. In verse 13 of the CSB version it is stated that they are “itinerant Jewish exorcists” while the NIV version describes them as “Jews
who went around driving out evil spirits”
4.
Difference – In verse 12 of the NIV version it was stated that handkerchiefs that had touched Paul while in the CSB version the word facecloths was used. While they are both fabric handkerchiefs tend to be more elegant and would have been harder to come by compared to facecloths during these times. Page 1 of 5

5.
Difference - In verse 21 of the NIV it is stated that Paul himself decided that he would go to Jerusalem. Verse 21 of the CSB it says that Paul was resolved by the spirit to go to Jerusalem. The CSB version of this verse makes Pauls action seem more kingdom minded/ aligned with the Lords plan.
C. Identify the basic elements of the story you are studying.
1.
Main characters: (List them)
Paul
God
Jews who were casting out evil spirits
The evil spirit
2. Plot: (50-100 words)
Because God did extraordinary miracles through Paul Jews would attempt to rid evil spirits from bodies by Invoking Jesus’ name “whom Paul preaches”. One day seven sons of Sceva and a Jewish official attempted this, and they were then beaten by the spirit. When the people of Ephesus found out about this, they became fearful and confessed their sins and those who did magic/sorcery burned their books/scrolls. Following this event Paul traveled to Jerusalem but first passed through Macedonia and Achaia with the intention of later visiting Rome. He sent his two helpers to Macedonia while he stayed in Asia.
3. Story structure: (50-100 words)
Note: Plot and Story Structure are not the same thing (see the tutorial and student example)
Introduction: God preformed miracles through Paul and Jews were aware of this and his ability to cast/chase away evil spirits.
Inciting Incident: Man is possessed by an evil spirit.
Rising Action: Seven sons of Sceva and a Jewish official called upon the name of Jesus to exorcise the man.
Climax: The seven sons of Sceva and the Jewish official were attacked by the spirit
