3 THEO I
JBRAZ
LIBERTY
Andrew, as I was reading through your post, I found a very interesting statement. You said “The Bible is considered the inspired Word of God. He is all-knowing, all-
powerful, and truthful; therefore, if His word contains deceit or error, He must also.” Sometimes I don’t believe Christians today understand the weight of this statement.
Erickson states “Inerrancy is a corollary of the doctrine of full inspiration. If, then, it should be shown that the Bible is not fully truthful, our view of inspiration would also be in jeopardy. (Erickson 2014, 194). I am reminded of the debate between Erasmus and Luther over the will. Luther claims that it is “The hinge on which all turns” (Luther 525). Biblical inerrancy is the hinge on which it all turns for the Christian. If the Bible is not being truthful in a particular area, then we have a much bigger issue on our hands. How then can we trust anything that we find within the scriptures?
The above being said, I believe it is important to understand that the reports of certain historical events are not 100% percent accurate. Erickson states “The Bible’s assertions are fully true when judged in accordance with the purpose for which they were written” (Erickson 2014, 204). The author may not be concerned with having a 100% actuate number of an army because that is not the purpose of the statement. The author is simply trying to convey that there is an approximate number of soldiers within a particular army.
As I was reading through the rest of your post, it would seem to me that you would take the position that I have taken on inerrancy. I have taken the position of Full Inerrancy which states “While the Bible does not primarily aim to give scientific and historical data, such scientific and historical assertions as it does make are fully true (Erickson 2014, 191). The reason for this is, we do need to account for the inaccuracies that occur as mentioned above which, as mentioned above, Erickson has laid out a point of why this occurs. I believe that we should be handling the Bible with integrity and honesty and the full inerrancy approach is the best way to do so. It can be tempting for us to want to hold to the “Absolute inerrancy” position because we want every word to be accurate, but we must be faithful to the text and
the body of Christ. Lastly, biblical inerrancy is incredibly important in the modern day. With the emergence of postmodern thinking and subjectivity, people believe they can pull whatever they want out of scripture and use it in anyway they want. What’s even worse is people just deny certain realities that are vital to the life of a Christian. If there was ever a time that we needed a strong defense and understanding of biblical inerrancy it is today.
