Bible Study Project: Observation
Passage: Acts 19:11-22
A. I have read Acts 19:11-22 in both a formal translation (NASB, NRSV, ESV, or CSB) and a functional translation (
NIV, NLT, or NCV). Highlight the correct answer. Please use the translation provided in your digital library or found at Biblegateway.com
Yes
No
Having read the passage in both formal and functional translation, list at least 2 similarities and 3
differences between the way both translations cover this story. These similarities and differences should be related to the text itself rather than the translation. For example, an observation like, “The formal translation is harder to read” is not an acceptable observation because it deals with the translation itself rather than the text. You may list as many similarities and differences that you find providing that you meet the minimum amount for each one.
Similarity – Both versions talk about how the handkerchiefs or aprons that touched Jesus’ skin were taken to people with diseases, illnesses, or evil spirits and they were healed. Similarity – Both translations tell that the seven exorcists are Sceva’s sons.
Difference – The ESV version says, “I adjure you by the Jesus whom Paul proclaims” but the NIV version says, “in the name of Jesus whom Paul preaches, I command you to come out.” The
NIV version is more of a command and the ESV version is more like a plea.
Difference – The ESV version says that the name of Jesus was “extolled” when fear fell upon the
Jews and Greeks. However, the NIV version says the name of Jesus was held in “high honor,"
Difference - In the NIV translation when the evil spirit overpowered them and gave them a beating it says, “they ran out of the house naked and bleeding.” However, in the ESV version it does not clarify that they were bleeding it just says, “they ran out of the house naked and wounded.”
C. Identify the basic elements of the story you are studying.
1. Main characters: (List them)
Paul
Timothy
Erastus
Sceva’s seven sons 2. Plot: (50-100 words)
God used Paul to do some extraordinary miracles like healing people who were overtaken by demons. Paul also gives an example of the power of God through Christ Jesus and shows the importance of having a relationship with the Lord.
3. Story structure: (50-100 words)
Introduction: God was using Paul to do miracles that commanded demons out of people's bodies and heal them. Inciting Incident: Sceva’s seven sons try to do an exorcism.
Rising Action:
The man who is possessed refuses to follow the men’s instruction because he does not know them. He says, “Jesus I know, and Paul I recognize, but who are you?”
Climax: Sceva’s sons were injured and attacked by the demon.
Falling Action: People became believers and came confessing their sins and burning things that were sinful in front of everyone. Resolution: Paul wanted to assist other people who were possessed by demons, so he went to other regions such as Rome, Macedonia, Jerusalem and Achaia. Note: Plot and Story Structure are not the same thing (see the tutorial and student example)
