Name: Melanie Rendon B ible Study Project: Interpretation Acts 19: 11-22 A. Summarize: Determine the author’s main point. In 1-2 paragraphs (200-400 words) explain what you think the author is trying to communicate in this passage. Remember two things. First, the focus of this summary is theological and not narrative. In other words, your summary should highlight what this passage communicates about who God is and what God is doing. Second, words like “I,” “We,” “Us,” and “Our” are application words and not interpretation words. Thus, they should not be used in your answer to this question. Interpretation is about “then and there” and not “here and now.” We were not there so the passage is not about us. Our “part” in the passage is the application or how we will respond to God’s Word. In Acts 19 11-12 details an occasion that took place during the early church, following the Assumption of our savior into Heaven. The early church was developing the astonishing story of Jesus Christ’s Assumption and Resurrection that was spread around the land. At this very moment Paul was teaching, preaching and healing people in the name of Christ. In the same time period, the church of Ephesus began. Having the knowledge of these stories of Paul performing these miracles, the Jewish people, more so the Chief Priests also wanted to be able to perform the works of Paul with the help of Christ but, these Priests didn’t have enough faith to do so. In result to this the evil Spirit ended up denying who these Priests were or even acknowledging their authority to be performing these acts. In this passage it demonstrates that the only power that can go against these evil Spirits and help heal these bodies and souls is the power of faith in our Heavenly Father. People realizing that these Chief Priests were lacking faith and authority was placed into the incorrect things. Such as their Magic books, and their scrolls, in (Acts 19:19) it states, “And a number of those who had practiced magic arts brought their books together and began burning them in the sight of everyone.” All these people put their trust in the word of God, God used the sons of Sceva to demonstrate that worldly powers are one hundred percent
powerless against the spiritual encounter that was presented. The only power and authority that can go head on and conquer the Gates of Hell is the faith in Jesus Christ. B. Identify: Based on your answer above, write out one principle from this passage. What is the one thing the whole thing is saying? You should be able to express this principle in 1- 3 sentences. As with the previous answer, this principle should be theological and rooted in who God is and/or what God is doing. Please remember that words like “I,” “We,” “Us,” and “Our” are application words and not interpretation words. God can try but will not be able to save us if we our faith is lacking in his ability to help our souls, Having Faith in Jesus Christ is the only way to be saved in God’s power. C. Check: Consult at least one scholarly resource to offer support for the theological principle that you believe the passage is teaching. In 1-2 paragraphs (200-400 words), quote, properly cite, and interact with this scholarly resource to demonstrate that it supports your theological and interpretive conclusion. You must consult the “Commentaries” and the “Bible Dictionaries & Handbooks” tab found on the research guide provided by the Jerry Falwell Library to access the approved academic and scholarly resources. These resources are the only approved resources. Using unapproved resources may result in a score of “0” for this assignment . The research guide can be found by following the link on the Bible Study Project: Interpretation Assignment under Bible Study Project: Interpretation Resource. The Theological Principal of Acts 19: 11-22 is that God has an absolute power, his power can only be shared to people that He sees worthy. Nevertheless, if a person tries to copy these powers, they will be demonstrated why a person shouldn’t try to copy God’s power and take him as a joke. Within all these passages it shows that God’s gave his power to heal people through Paul. After seeing these wonderful events being done the priests
wanted to duplicate it and as soon as these Priests started trying to do these acts, they quickly learned that there were wrongful doings. In (MacArthur, 2005, pg. 3333) it states, “There were Jewish exorcists that claimed power to cast out demons.” The Seven Son’s of Sceva were not called upon God to be able to perform these miracles. They acknowledged that using God’s name should not work for their own gain. The Seven Son’s of Sceva had all the wrong reasons to perform those acts so the demons attacked them as the spirit knew about Paul and Jesus Christ. Ephesians were informed about these happenings and from then on, the people from Ephesus didn’t want to follow The Seven Son’s of Sceva. So, they burned their magic books and stopped practicing that art. In (MacArthur, 2005, Pg. 3752) it states, “Burning them proved their repentance.” Act 19: 11-22 shows how powerful our Heavenly Father is and how important it is to have God’s Guidance.
