Unit 1: Discussion Question Discuss the relevance and integration of the two selected scriptural passages for this section of the course into the teaching and learning of mathematics, including various approaches to assessment and remediation. You are looking at this from a secular point of view as well as a Christian point of view – how would a non-Christian teacher approach the teaching of mathematics and the changes required in instruction and assessment? How would a Christian teacher approach it? Post a thorough discussion, and comment freely and deeply on the comments of your classmates? Teaching is a calling that God placed on many of our hearts. I know this because, over the last few years, I have been trying to avoid this path. I have always wanted to help others, so I decided that I would become a counselor or a social worker. But that was not what God had planned for me. I found a love for teaching and the children when I was asked to teach at a Christian school. It was wonderful, because my passion grew and I was able to share my faith with my students, while helping them grow in their faith. Because of my new found passion, I decided to listen to God and begin my journey becoming a teacher. I now work with the public school system where it is frowned upon by sharing Christ with students. But that is something I strive to do daily. I do this by sharing love, compassion, patience, and joy with my students. I had one student tell me that she knew that I was a Christian. When I asked why she thought that, she stated it was because I am one of the most patient loving teachers she has ever met. That made me feel so good, knowing that God’s love is showing through me. This discussion asks, how would a non-Chrisitian and a Christian teacher approach the teaching of mathematics, and the changes required in instruction and assessments? A non-Christian teacher may see teaching as an opportunity to pass along their knowledge to their students. They may even get joy from seeing their students succeeding. I believe that non-Christian teachers are focused on what is in front of them. They may feel that the only importance is that students learn the material so that they will pass state required assessments. They focus on these assessments because they want to look like a successful teacher on paper from the state's point of view. A christian teacher teaches for a completely different reason. They have been called to this profession by God to nurture the minds of their students. Because we have our purpose, we may see this “job” as a privilege to teach. Every morning, I ask God to give me the wisdom, confidence, and strength to teach my students. I know that the way I teach will have an effect on my instruction. If I feel that I am confident in the way I teach, my students will learn more. Which will result in the majority passing those required assessments. I know many of us want to look like excellent teachers, especially on paper. I also know it is frowned upon to see schools with low testing scores. Honestly, that part is something I could care less about. As long as I know my students are learning the content. With that being said, I do know that funding is provided to schools because of scores. In order to continue to teach, I will teach my students to strive to pass those exams. There is a great reminder from Matthew 6:33, and it states, “Seek ye first the Kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you” (Holy Bible). This verse is a great reminder that if you are faithful and trust the Lord, good things will come to pass. Even having successful students. Reference King James Bible. (2017).
